"Tapadh leat," Ernie answered with a bow of his head and opened the little box. He smiled at the brooch and once again both bowed his head and thanked her, though this time he gave her a small hug to show his appreciation for her thoughtful gift. Having grown up speaking two languages at home, he was very used to slipping back and forth between his English and his Gaelic, and both of those always came out much better than his French. For a second he contemplated putting it on his school robes, but it didn't seem right without any of the other attire. Maybe that was silly. "It's wonderful, I'll wear it soon. Oh, I have been practicing my chess though, I may have an actual shot of winning a game today."
That was an outright lie, but he assumed Morag would take on the challenge just as well. It wasn't like he played chess because he thought he had a chance, he really just enjoyed her company, and appreciated that she didn't do silly things like let him win.
