Being a Muggleborn Hermione had come across enough disingenuous attitudes that she was well aware that Lily's was not lost on her. Not that Hermione blamed her. If she had learned information similar to what was on the paper had held only moments ago she couldn't say she wouldn't be holding people at arms length. In fact, her experience at Malfoy manner had thrown Hermione back into her self protective manner from first year. Sadly, many of them held such events in their hearts. Only some hid them better than others.
Hermione watched Lily's reaction to the letter and knew some of that feeling. She'd been forced to use Bellatrix's wand but once she'd obtained a new one the first thing she'd done was destroy the instrument of her torture. She wondered if Lily held this same sort of contempt for the piece of parchment that while innocent in and of itself represented something more than it seemed to the general observer. "I didn't tell anyone," she said softly when Lily looked at her.
