Starbuck wasn't a legal expert, but he'd find one if shit ever got down to that. Fortunately, he didn't think it would. Lani was telling him now, so that surely meant she planned to let him be part of Kamea's life. Now that he was in it, he wasn't going anywhere, though it would be tricky working out boundaries and all that. He wanted as big of a role as possible, but it would take time to get there, and he knew that. Starbuck didn't want to be an absent father, look how fucked up kids could become without dads? Hell no. His baby wasn't growing up like that.
Whether Kai got it didn't matter. Starbuck couldn't believe she'd kept this from him. It was the first time he'd ever felt betrayed by his mother, and it was going to cause a strain in their relationship for a while, though Starbuck would never shut her out, not even temporarily. What if they were fighting or ignoring one another, and something happened to her? He'd never forgive himself.
Hearing that Kai knew about all this even before Starbuck had come home made him all the more angry. "Wait, you were in Maui, and she knew about it... all while I was home?" he asked, that strained tone returning to his voice before he squashed it. "Gonna have to call her later," he grumbled a little. Starbuck walked with Kamea in his arms over to sit on the couch, then plopped her down on his lap. "Well, that aside, glad Mom got to meet her." He glanced up at Lani, "So... start talkin'... I wanna know stuff about her... about all that's happened in the past year. Spill." There was stuff he'd need to share as well, but right now, learning about Kamea was more important.
