He was wrong about one thing. Even if he was the father, since they were never married, his rights legally were pretty sketchy at best. Lani knew that. Not that she would be one of those bitches that would pull something like that, but she really did not have to tell him about Kamea, or even let him near her. Which was pretty much what she had been doing for the past year, but not for lack of thinking he was a good guy. He was not going to understand the situation, no matter how she explained it. How could he? He would never have to experience being pregnant.
It had taken hours to convince his mother not to tell him. Even though she was a woman, it just took a while to explain the circumstances so that she would just get it. Though Lani was still not entirely sure that Kai did get it. At least neither of them could say she had done a bad job with her daughter. Lani was a good mom and Kamea was a happy kid, no one could accuse her of otherwise.
"Your mom met us in the park." she said quietly. "Was taking Kamea for the swings. She recognized me from back when we were... whatever we were." Kai had been a lot quicker on the math than Starbuck had. Not that he had been completely slow, but Lani had not even realized completely just who Kai was when it had all happened. "Brought her over a few times before you came home on break."
