I was maybe 19 when I was with a California friend in a little grocery store and said, "What's that?" pointing to an avocado. He couldn't believe I didn't know. He bought one, and as we walked down the street in the beautiful sunshine, cleanly peeled half the skin off with a pocket knife, and handed the weird green thing to me saying, "Better with a little salt, but... try it!"
