It was hard for Zechs to admit defeat, but there was no denying it. They had failed at Mars. A strange disease, against which they had no defense, had swept across the settlements, killing hundreds. Now there was a mad scramble to leave the disease-ridden world. "It's not defeat, Zechs. It's a temporary retreat until we get reinforcements," assured Noin, preparing for take-off. "Say what you will," he grunted. He finished his own and leaned back, irritated. Noin sighed and shook her head then wiped her mouth and stared with horror at her hand. Mars was again a wasteland after the settlers fled, fearful of the new disease. Unfortunately, many that fled already had it and had to be quarantined for the health of the general public. One in quarantine was Lucrezia Noin. Sally watched from behind glass. There was nothing the doctors could do for her now. Her disease had spread too far. "I gave them my blood to find a cure," Zechs said beside her. He was somehow immune. She nodded, having no words. The results would be of no use to Noin, though. All they could do was wait for death.

Sally dabbed her eyes. There was no corpse in the casket. Doctors had deemed the health risk too high for a funeral, and all the people who had died from the illness from Mars had to be cremated. An empty casket, like that of Zechs, now lay in the church. Many people showed up speaking pretty words about the brave lieutenant turned Preventer turned pioneer. Zechs spoke no words and merely sat in his seat, staring at the coffin. "She spent her life giving everything she had to the mission—now for the final one. God bless you, Lady Noin."
