I have to admit, Snape's motivations are a mystery to me normally, and no, I don't think of him as kind either, but in my head, I sort of think that Harry's being too black and white with this--too pessimistic. But also that they both need each other, and yes, perhaps Snape is lying because he's afraid if he doesn't, he will lose Harry.
