“It’s not that I haven’t been trying.” She was frustrated by the whole situation, but not at Wilbur. Jesse didn’t sound angry, just tired. She spoke slowly but once she started trying to explain, she couldn’t stop. “First time we talk he tells me I can keep the baby ‘til she’s one and then he wants to take her. He doesn’t specify. I don’t find out until ages later that he’d bring her back. Maybe I over-reacted.” That was a bad misunderstanding. She’d definitely over-reacted, but she’d felt so backed into a corner. It was strange to try to see it now from his side.
“But what if there are summoners out there who can get her? How can I let my baby face that?” She breathed and tried to calm; she knew she’d cry again if she got like this. Jesse was so thoroughly confused. For the first time it occurred to her that Rahul might have had a plan. In fact, he must have. She didn’t think he would come all this way and work so hard just to have someone summon the babe from his arms.
“You think he’d already thought about that.” The statement was rhetorical. She’d never considered that he’d have any way around it. He just seemed so adamant about impressing upon her the importance of her baby’s heritage – a heritage that she knew nothing about excepting the liabilities. “Oh, God.” She put her head in her hands. Could they have misunderstood each other so incredibly badly?
“I wasn’t thinking and he didn't explain." She wasn't convinced she was the only one to blame, but she was willing to own part. "All I knew was it was move here or die and then Tracey did die and… it’s such a mess.” It raised so many questions for her.
