He withered under her stare, the guilty feeling intensifying, but he still made wild hand gestures of reassurance.
"Everythin's fine!" he said, "I just, uh. I guess I agreed t'take her t'her ultrasound on Monday?"
Wilbur flinched and waved his hands again, supplicating his girlfriend for patience.
"I was jus' buyin' groceries, an' I saw her, an' she looked a lot more pregnant than when I saw her last," Wilbur explained as quickly as his awkward drawl allowed, "An' I said hi an' told 'er she looked nice, 'cause you just gotta say that or else yer in fer trouble, an' she just started bawlin' in th'middle of the supermarket, an' you know some folks know I'm an avatar so it di'n't really shine nice on me, so I gave her a hug an' wound up offerin' t'take her t'th' hospital for her ultrasound."
Wilbur took a breath.
"She's gonna pay fer gas money," he said, "I won't go if y'don't want me to, Nancy, I was just feelin' real bad f'her. She was all pregnant an' weepy an' I couldn't jus' leave 'er like that when I got her bawlin' t'start with."
