Gilly had been a little surprised by how easy it was to act human. Even though she’d been kept in a basement and used as a grisly home security system, she’d still been exposed to a great deal of social behaviour. Maybe not all correct social behaviour, but it wasn’t as though she’d been completely walled off from it. And she’d been raised in a relatively pleasant environment before her unfortunate change of scenery.
It helped, though, that most of her issues involved more personal things. Like how she just couldn’t sleep on the air mattress just yet, and curled up in the closet at night. How vegetables, even bread, made her gag a little. How she sometimes watched people on the street and imagined how they tasted.
Living with Tom was the biggest help. Other people had been kind to her, like the very nice woman, Jane, who’d helped her pick new clothes, but Tom she’d latched onto immediately as a stable fixture in her life. He understood what she was going through, and he was patient. Since living with him, she’d learned that just because she was indoors it wasn’t okay to just leave her clothes off, that not eating more than meat would do bad things to her human body, and that a shower was a daily thing, and that it could be hot water instead of just sprayed from a hose.
She liked living in Grey Haven so far, and she was pleased with herself for getting by. The weather meant she didn’t have to wear lots of layers, and she was even considering getting some kind of job. Although TV was a very engaging pastime, Gilly needed to fill her days with other things since patrolling the house for ne’er-do-wells wasn’t especially necessary.
They were having a guest tonight, which hadn’t happened since she arrived, and Gilly was naturally very curious to meet the librarian. She hadn’t visited the library yet, mostly because she was just a bit leery of leaving her home all alone, but if she knew someone at the library, she would be keener to venture out into the world.
“Does she know a lot about books?” Gilly asked from her perch sitting on the counter, watching Tom prepare a meal for the three of them, “Could I ask her a lot of questions about them?”
