Jesse's eyes widened in fear the moment he pointed out not being able to read minds now. It didn't help that he explained it away the next moment either. She didn't think this was funny. This wasn't going to work, she thought. If they couldn't get through tea, she didn't want him there next week.
The 'only human' line got to her too. There was nothing wrong with being human. If he was going to do nothing more than belittle her and put her down, as she saw it, she'd find a way to do this without him.
"I'm not 'speaking down to you." She was hurt by the implication. She wanted him to stop treating her like she was putting herself above him. She was just trying to somehow get through this situation. She would have said more, but she stopped, knowing it was pointless.
She gave it another try, hoping to salvage things before she made them worse. "I just mean I don't want to fight or negotiate or try to discuss the future. I just want to get through the appointment and go home." The fingers of one hand clenched tightly, crumpling the paper napkin in her hand. Go home - not with him, she meant. In fact, the entire sentence gave more away about her fear of the appointment than of Rahul. She was nervous about it. She knew she could decide she didn't want to know boy or girl and they'd respect that, but what if Rahul wanted to know and they told him? He'd already proven that he could get ahold of confidential information.
