Jesse felt especially tired today after work. Her feet were sore and her back ached, but she felt like she needed to be outdoors for a little while. It was too much to be cooped up indoors right now. Too many enclosed spaces with too many people ate away at her nerves and made her lose her temper. Right now, all she wanted was to relax and calm down. She’d been feeling under the weather for the last week, making her feel even more trapped than usual. She hadn’t expected pregnancy to be easy, but it was proving even harder than she’d feared. Her emotions still flared and subsided so badly that she felt she ought to be declared a natural disaster.
She hated it so much. Jesse loved her baby, but it all gnawed on what patience and control she had. For now though, it was nice to go for a walk, to remember to slow down and breathe. One step at a time, literally. It had become her mantra. It was all she could do given the chain of events that had led her to the town. Jesse wandered with no destination in mind. There was no purpose to it. She didn’t seek out the library or any of the stores.
Thoughts and worries had filled her head all day long. She had realized that she was going to get to the point financially that she’d either have to take Rahul up on his offer of help or she’d have to call her parents. The former wasn’t worth considering and the latter scared her silly. She’d replayed that phone call a thousand times in her head. It was enough to make her think she could probably even convince her mom not to fly out here, but that didn’t make it any easier to actually do it.
