Draco, hunched over a stack of parchments at his desk, looked up when he heard a small voice say his name. He sat back and gestured to Scorpius, inviting his son to come in. Draco never refused the children when they wanted to speak to him. It was one of the changes he'd been determined to make from his own childhood. There was nothing more important than his children. If he was in his lab, he wasn't to be bothered, and they obeyed that rule. Anywhere else, and he'd always interrupt his work for them.
"What do you have there, little man?" he asked. Scorpius was carrying a book beneath his arm, a long ribbon dangling out of it. Draco smiled to see Doc peek through the door and nod in satisfaction, his tiny charge delivered safely.
Scorpius came up to the desk and stood at Draco's side, holding the book up. "Hep, Daddy?" he said. Draco lifted Scorpius onto his lap, whereupon Scorpius opened the book on top of the desk and pointed to a word. The problem was clear. Scorpius had collected a couple of more-advanced books on their last trip to the children's library, and there were several words he didn't know. Even a very precocious Malfoy ran across new words and needed help learning them.
"Conundrum," Draco said, sounding it out slowly for Scorpius to follow. "It means something like, er. Like a riddle or a puzzle." He read with Scorpius for a few minutes until the clock chimed, then he caught movement outside the door. Draco smiled at Hermione before he gave his son a kiss on the top of his blond head. "All right, that's all for tonight. Three new words learned, excellent work. We'll add those to your list. Now it's time for bed."
