"Three Sisters," Andromeda, G Title: Three Sisters Author:kethlenda Character: Andromeda Black Rating: G Word Count: 282 Summary:Once upon a time there were three sisters.
A/N: This was originally meant to be a little digression within "The Ouroboros Ring" but it sort of took on a life of its own and no longer quite fit in. Just a rambly little ficlet with references to many tales.
Once upon a time there were three sisters.
In real life, sometimes there are two, or four, or eight. In stories, there are always three. The advantage of this, of course, is that you can figure out early that you're living in a story. The only question is which sister you are. There are always two who are the same and one who is not--the odd girl out--and there comes a day when Andromeda realizes she is the one fated to break the charmed circle.
The third sister is the one who is forgotten, a black-charred naught between two shining names.
The third sister is the one who is remembered. Medusa may have died, but no one tells the tale of Stheno, or of Euryale. The names of Psyche's sisters are lost in the dust of time. It is not Melior and Palatine whose blood the noble houses claim.
The third girl, alone among the three, writes her own tale. Not that she knows, of course, what her tale will be when she first grasps the quill. Her life may turn to ash. (Then again, ash has a funny way of turning to glitter and glass when you least expect it.) She might tame a beast, or in stygian darkness entertain the golden god of love.
She's the one who will esteem a rose above a casque of gold, and a bitter truth above a honeyed lie.
Once upon a time there were three sisters, and one of them was mortal.
Once upon a time there were three sisters, and one of them did not exist.
Once upon a time there were three sisters, and one of them survived.
