Status: Complete
Malachi wanted to pick up some fresh coffee from the cafe near the gallery before he had to teach the class. He was excited, yet so nervous, to see Lavender. He hadn't seen her since last Monday, actually, and between then and now he'd been on a date with Ben. The date only confirmed what he already knew somewhere in the back of his mind. Ben and he made better friends than lovers; Ben and he were best friends and would stay that way. Part of him, honestly, was disappointed. But then he thought of Lavender, he thought of how she made him feel, how she walked and talked and moved, who she was, and he knew that the conclusion he and Ben had come to that night had been right. He just hoped they could put it all behind them and carry on as friends, just friends. It would be hard, and he didn't want the teasing and flirting to stop. They shouldn't have to change everything, not when it suddenly was more harmless than before. There were things like the touching that was more than just in friendship and the kissing that would stop, but other than that he liked his friendship with Ben the way it was and saw no reason anyone would see it as more than a very close friend which is what he hoped it still was. Getting interrupted by Ben's homophobic father hadn't helped any, though. He'd already checked on Ben twice to make sure the man was okay after the encounter, had tea with Miss Lily and found what she was doing ridiculously and asking to be hurt again. But it was her life and he had to let it go.
As he pushed the glass door of the cafe open, he didn't bother to see if someone was on the other side. Most people would notice the man that he swung the door into, but Malachi was so preoccupied with seeing Lavender again that he didn't. Embarrassing as it was, it only got worse when his coffee toppled from his band to the ground and spilled all over both of their shoes, the top flying off. "Oh shit," was all Malachi could think to say as he stared down at the wasted coffee and the stranger's sneakers which were soaked with coffee now.
