Astoria didn't notice Daphne's frown. She was still squinting at the light.
She didn't miss Daphne's sigh, however. Astoria knew that it wasn't a topic her sister would usually enjoy discussing and normally she'd agree. But this time was different. She felt… betrayed somehow, even though she knew that made no sense. They were casual and made no commitment but he'd disrespected her and put her reputation at risk. Astoria couldn't forgive that, especially coming from a supposed friend. She didn't want to acknowledge that her pride had been wounded or that there were deeper reasons why she felt hurt. Hell, she didn't even want to admit that she was hurt.
Her brows furrowed as Daphne moved from behind the counter and she wondered where she was going. When she returned with the coffee, Astoria wrinkled her nose. She preferred tea, but this would have to do for now. At Daphne's words Astoria rolled her eyes, headache be damned. "I think I know how to get rid of a lousy lay," she finally snapped. Daphne was obviously impatient with her, but that simply served to irritate Astoria. And it felt good to be irritated. Perhaps that was what she needed, to be angry. She brought the cup of coffee to her lips and took at sip. The warmth of the liquid was comforting even if she thought the cheap coffee tasted awful. Still, it made her feel better. Or maybe it was the familiarity of Daphne's bitchiness that was actually comforting.
Astoria set the cup down on the counter and took a deep breath. "I've been spending time with this guy. Nothing serious. But there was obviously sexual tension. Anyway, we slept together but for the whole… Oh I don't know… 4 months we knew each other, he failed to mention the fact that he's engaged." She said the word as if it were a curse, as if the very thought disgusted her. And at that moment it did. "Engaged to my former coworker."
