She shook her head with a smile. "I feel very special then," she teased back. "Although I think you should give yourself more credit than that," she said a little more honestly. It wasn't so much that he was entertaining -- Astoria just enjoyed his company and for whatever reason she wanted him to know that. She hoped he felt the same way about her.
Astoria wasn't sure what to say. They always seemed to end up in a weird place. How was it so easy for her to say the wrong thing? Was it that bad that she'd been caught by surprise? She was beginning to feel like she couldn't win with him unless they were kissing. She didn't like that. She wanted to believe there was a little more to them besides physical attraction. But what if there wasn't? He'd sleep with her and then…? Astoria tried to keep the dejection she felt out of her voice. "A little. Why does it matter?" she asked with a shrug, not letting her smile falter this time even though she didn't really feel like smiling anymore. She almost told him that she knew a lot of things, but that what was going through his head was not one of them. "I like that about you. The boldness." Astoria hoped it was reassurance enough. She could tell him she wanted him too. Would that fix anything? She didn't think so.
