When Cormac owled Alette for lunch today, he had no idea what the weekend would hold. To be honest and nothing against Alette at all, he probably wouldn't have done it if he knew he'd sit here engaged to his best friend and after a more than slightly uncomfortable meeting with his parents. Of course his mother was on board, though know he wondered how much she actually knew. It was frustrating that there was no way for him to just ask her. McLaggens didn't do that and he didn't think he could take the answer if he could. His father had been... exactly as he expected, including the owl that followed at his place later that night that Katie wasn't aware of. It hadn't been insulting to Katie at all; in fact, he hadn't mentioned her. It was merely remaining him, in a commanding word choice he ignored, of "traditions" and "who he was".
If anyone knew who he was it was Cormac himself. And beyond that it was Katie and Lavender. Anyone else? It was wild guess from there, including his parents.
His mind would not be on his lunch. He wasn't even sure if he should mention being engage to Alette. They'd said the only people they were misleading was his parents, so if he did, she'd also find out the truth. She wasn't bad; she was nice and kind and sweet, really. But he didn't think she'd agree either. He didn't need another disapproval under his belt less than 48 hours into his engagement. They'd come, but they can come slowly and one at a time. Anyway, they hadn't told Katie's mum or Lavender yet and those were the two important people left. Not that his parents was important.
Fuck you, McLaggen tradition. I'm doing it my way, Cormac thought as she took a drink of his water and waited for Alette at the table.
