Ben had been working tirelessly all day on Gwen's wing. He had tried many approaches to replace the missing webbing and part of the bone across her left phalange. Nothing seemed to hold though. He had finally came up with what he thought would be a permanent attachment, metal fitting beneath the skin, acting like a bone with a synthetic wing fiber stretched across. Every test flight was dangerous to her and stressful on Ben. The goal was not to have her crash and fall, injuring herself even further. It was a tedious and frustrating processes that took time. Time the Ministry wasn't willing to bestow on the beautiful creature. Ben, along with Mandy and Zach had given her that time and now he had to make it really happen. He knew he had to get her out of here soon. He could only keep a dragon in his back lot for so long before being discovered. She was becoming restless having to keep her bound within a small area. But that didn't stop her from starting forest fires and eating up the wildlife. She certainly kept Ben on her toes.
Ben stood at the ready with his wand up, letting down the shields that held Gwen in her enclosure. He then gave her a nod to let her know it was time for another test flight. He had to be ready for disaster, to cast a impediment spell on the large blue dragon if she fell. It wasn't easy to do on such a large creature and sapped all off Ben's strength each time. So these test flights were few and far between. Ben had to be confident in every attempt.
He held his breath watching Gwen take flight, gripping his wand tight up in the air, following her every move. Taking off was never the problem for her, it was the moments that followed. She would always lose her balance and spin out of control. But as he watched her now, she was gliding through the air above the trees so smooth. Ben kept waiting to see that familiar jerking motion Gwen would do just before she'd lose control. But it wasn't happening. She flapped her wings, raising even higher in the sky. Ben couldn't believe his eyes. She looked so beautiful, like the old dragon he knew she could be. He was stunned. He felt like laughing and crying all at once. He had finally done it. His heart raced with pride as he wiped a tear away from his face. Though now that he had fixed his broken dragon, what was he going to do with her now? He couldn't keep her there with him forever. It wasn't fair to her to keep her enclosed when she could fly. She needed to be somewhere where she could have the space and freedom. Ben never wanted to keep her as a captive. Just to save her.
He now had to squint his eyes to see her high up in the sky. "Oh shit!" She was excited, going too high and might cause some unwanted attention for them both. Ben quickly mounted his broom and darted up after her.
