Futureman
CHARACTERS: Nathaniel, Illyana , Nathaniel, and Eva.
TOPIC: Whoa, this is heavy.
DATE & TIME: Current?
LOCATION: Xavier's Mansion.
"When you're done dusting," Nate began from behind the long wooden check-in desk while Illyana listened... seemingly unimpressed. "I've selected the next few books you should read," Nathaniel told the blond and stacked several larger tomes onto the desk.
Magik's eyelids narrowed and the Russian girl shot invisible daggers at the dark haired librarian. "There are always more books..." Illyana complained, fist clenched around the handle of the well-used duster. "Is it not enough I have been assigned to this prison of wood and paper?" she complained with a huff.
Nathaniel's expression bordered on confusion for a moment and his tongue rested between his teeth. "Three-fifths of your soul was corrupted by the ruler of a hell dimension..." Nate stated the obvious because apparently Magik required it. "You could at least do the reading," he told her and moved out from behind the desk.
"You are a ruler of a hell dimension," Illyana spat back under her breath and with the deliberate attitude of a spoiled child.
"Oh, I wish," Nate's eyes brightened at the moment and his earnestness showed. "Perhaps I could get a message to Thor. Maybe he needs someone to lord over a demonic realm," he added with the causal cadence of a man inquiring about whether or not there were doughnuts in the break room. "Dust, then read," he instructed his mystical charge. "Thank me later," he added and finally let a smirk escape - right before he exited the library all together.
Nathaniel's body felt numb and when the sensation started to return, his skin felt ablaze. Nobody could have known how it would have felt, on the contrary, he'd been expecting much worse. The ball of lightning that had preceded his appearance had dissipated, but the fiery aftermath had left singed leaves and branches in the woods beyond Xavier's. His eyes spied the school from the cover of foliage and he tried not to lose his focus. The mutant faded into the shadows and vanished from sight...
Caltrops reappeared inside the school, and with little time he ducked down an abandoned hallway and tried to stay off the well-traveled paths. His feet quickly carried him silently through the halls and toward his target until... A familiar voice could be heard from behind him. Of course she'd found him, it would have been her. Her lycan senses more in-tuned than he'd remembered. Nathaniel should have disappeared, bolted, or... anything but what he did. He turned, looked Eva in the eyes, and quietly stared at the woman whose beauty had somehow been diminished in his memory. His odd clothes, untamed hair, and an extra bit of grey in his beard probably clued her in first. Of course, what happened next certainly didn't help.
"Hey, Eva," Nathaniel said from behind the Latina - confused as to why she'd called after him yet walked in the opposite direction. "I left the library a little early, I thought I’d surprise you..." Nate explained when he turned the corner and moved to Eva's side. "What's..." he started, then realized what Eva had been chasing. It was himself... at least a version of him. The Nathaniel at the end of hall was... a dead ringer for the Nathaniel who stood beside Eva... all but the eyes. They were much, much sadder. "Fascinating," Nate added, eyes fixated on his other self.
"Indeed," Nathaniel answered his younger self then focused his eyes onto Eva. "I can explain..." he started and raised his gloved hands in a sign of surrender. "But we need to talk in private," he urged, awaited her response, and tried to keep his feelings in check. He couldn't break the first time he saw Eva, he needed to stay focused to complete his mission... God, he loved her so much.
