Today was Joanne's two year check-up. It was hard to believe it'd been two years since they'd rescued each other. Jean-Paul mentally kicked himself as he took a drag from the cigarette between his fingers. Kyle didn't approve of him smoking, he knew. Northstar had given it up years ago, but in times of extreme stress, he found himself reaching for one with slightly shaking fingers. What if Brian gave them bad news? What if his little girl wasn’t as healthy as she seemed to be? He knew worrying wouldn’t help, but it didn’t make it any easier.

He hated it. Not because of the smell or the various things it yellowed, or even because Zap and Brian spent half of their time rallying against the habit. Piotr hated it simply because it shortened a person’s lifespan and there was one person in particular... and well, it broke him.
He was about to pay for the gas, but the clerk had waited; Pete’s eyes were fixed on the wall of cigarettes. He was supposed to pick up some, but he wouldn’t. He’d once again “forget”; the Russian scooped up a bag of chips instead – salt was a healthier vice.

Sniff, sniff. Sni-i-i-i-i-ff. What the...
Glowing red numbers came into (blurring) focus through the dark and a hand reached out for the glasses laying near her alarm clock. Once perched on the groggy Liberian's nose, she sat up. 3:45am. The smell was less now. She must've been having that dream again. It was the same every time. Smoke and fire, and her grandmother screaming biblical insults. It had been a normal occurrence during her childhood.
Rhia sighed and threw herself back against her pillows to stare up at the ceiling. She might've joked about it, but she wasn't over it.

Last year's bonfire... she smiled while she raked, recalling the event fondly. Or, at least, one happening in particular. She'd coaxed Piotr downstairs to the boat docks from where'd they'd been cuddling in the window seat of the boathouse. She thought for sure he'd be uncomfortable in the swaying rowboat, considering his size and land-locked background. Instead, he'd used the lapping of the waves to time the rhythm of his hips after he'd laid her back into the bottom of the boat atop his sweater. It had turned out they were both at home on the water.
