He found himself holding his breathe as Izzy tried to speak to the staff. He desperately wanted this to work, and yet, he wasn't surprised when nothing happened. They were still, somehow invisible. He was going to explain that this had happened to him earlier, but something unexpected happened. She started choking. "Hey, fuck, just br-" he had reached out to try and clap her on the back but her skin, her eyes had changed and he found himself stumbling backwards a step. She looked like a corpse. Something registered in his head, but then it was gone as her color came back and she coughed up something. He recoiled instinctually, first fearing that it was vomit, but it was water, not bile, like she had been drowned. He was so close but he couldn't quite fit the pieces together or maybe he just didn't like what picture they revealed.
It took him a moment to remember basic compassion, and he reached forward to gently pull her hair back as she continued to cough, his other hand between her shoulder blades. "I know. But we can't. And they can't-" see us "-help us. Let's find somewhere for you to lie down. I promise to be a gentleman." The smile he offered didn't quite reach his eyes.
