summary: Aaron takes care of a late night patient.
Ding-Dong.
Aaron awoke with a snort, his eyes only barely staying open. He tiredly looked around his living room, then down at the book resting on his chest. "Fell asleep on the couch again," he mumbled, lifting the book off of his chest and dumped it haphazardly on his end-table. They amount of times he dozed off on the couch was too high to bother counting. He really needed to get in the habit of resting in his own bed; his body couldn't handle the couch for long periods of time.
Stretching, Aaron forced himself to sit up with feet resting on the floor. Why did he wake up again? "Oh, right. Door," he said aloud, answering his own question. He lifted himself from the couch with a grunt, taking a moment to run his hand through his hair on his way to the door.
Considering the time, the person behind the door was most likely someone seeking medical attention. He urged his patients to go to the emergency room if there was a medical problem that needed to be dealt with quickly, but some people just didn't trust the ER. They trusted him, though. So instead of sending them away Aaron took care of them. He couldn't send them away with a clear conscience, not when he knew full well they would just ignore the problem rather than go to the hospital.
When he opened the door, Aaron was met with an unfamiliar face. An unfamiliar face that looked like hell. The man was soaked, excess water that seeped into his raincoat dripping on the floor, and looked ghostly pale. He greeted Aaron, his voice strained. You could tell from the tightness in his voice that he was fighting off pain...
Within minutes the two were in one of the examining rooms of the clinic. Aaron felt gently around the swollen shoulder of the stranger, concluding almost immediately that he was suffering from a dislocated shoulder. His patient only nodded when he was told the conclusion of the examination and asked to have it set back into place. Aaron hesitated. While he knew how to put a shoulder back in place - he had done it many times over the years - he was uncomfortable about doing it before X-rays could be taken. Who knew if there was any other damage done to the shoulder. As much as Aaron wanted to refuse and send the man straight to the hospital, he knew better than to do so.
With a mental sigh, Aaron got the Novocaine and injected it into the man's shoulder. Once the swelling died down some and numbness set it, he reset the shoulder. The stranger seemed to be satisfied with the work, flashing his caretaker a shaky smile. Aaron retrieved a sling from the supply closet and help him put it on. Then the man was on his way, right back into the rainy night with just a quick goodbye.
Aaron shut off all the lights and locked up the clinic before retreating back to his apartment on the second floor. He plopped down on his bed, staring up at the ceiling.
"What a peculiar man."
