Log: Bruce Wayne and Zatanna Zatara
summary! [Autumn 1979] Seven year old Zee decides to pay ten year old Bruce a random visit. Interruption of homework and fun ensues!
Bruce. Bruce Wayne, age 10, sat on the floor with some of his school work spread around him. He was bent over a schoolbook, scribbling the assignment down. It was a new school year at Brentwood Academy, easily a few weeks into the term. Bruce -- despite attracting the attention of many of his classmates -- was that quiet kid who sat to the side of the room, someone with his nose in the book who would rather work by himself than in groups. It was early enough in the afternoon, shortly after school let out for the day. Alfred had given him some snack, which sat on top of one of his books now that Alfred left him alone.
Zee. Having never been exposed to it, seven year old Zatanna didn't really understand the regular schooling system at all or get the significance of things like private schools. Her transient life meant she was homeschooled, both by her father and by private tutors. In some ways it was a lot more efficient and you could get through all your lessons a lot quicker, especially at times like now, when the Zataras had a bit of down time between shows. Academics weren't her favorite thing, but she'd discovered if she just paid attention in the first place and got it over with she'd be done and wouldn't have to worry about it for a while, giving her time to do other things. Like go visit Bruce! What better way to alleviate boredom with no more lessons for the day and no more shows for at least two?
As soon as Zatanna had worked out how to do the teleportation thing right, she'd begun to simply 'show up' at Wayne Manor every now and then as the whim hit her. Usually she just walked around until she found her friend, admiring and sometimes messing with the very impressive things in the house that she was almost certainly not supposed to touch. It never took very long to track Bruce down and if she got really impatient she'd just teleport from room to room, which is exactly what she'd resorted to today, suddenly appearing behind him and completely ignoring the fact he was hard at work on something. "Hi, Bruce!" Oooh, is that a snack? Maybe Alfred will make her one too.
Bruce. Ack! Bruce jumped slightly, his pencil skidded across the paper. He turned from where he sat on the floor to look back at her. "Zee. Don't sneak up on me like that," he frowned slightly before turning back to his work. He was going to have to erase around what he wrote to get rid of the glaring pencil mark. He sighed and started doing that meticulously. He had left his snack untouched, as usual until he heard Alfred walking around and then he ate some. Instead of saying anything else, he just offered her the plate. He had gotten somewhat used to Zee popping in at random -- even if she startled him from time to time.
Zee. She never meant to startle him with her random appearances, it just kind of happened. There was a brief hint of a frown as she shrugged. "Sorry." Skipping around to the other side of Bruce she looked over his shoulder along the way, eyeing both his homework and his snack, which she would leave untouched for now. Those cookies won't be safe for long though, Wayne, have no doubt. Flopping down to sit Indian style, Zee leaned forward, propping her elbows on her knees and cradling her chin in her palms. "What're you working on?" Obviously homework, but you know.
Bruce. Zee should definitely eat some cookies before Alfred came back around. Bruce didn't want it to be made a big deal. "English," he said as he focused on erasing around his homework. He glanced up at her. "Grammar. What are you doing?" Since she was so curious about what he was doing, he would return the gesture. He figured there was something boring going on with her dad or the act or her day if she was going to come visit him.
Zee. Why is Bruce anti-cookie? You really shouldn't make the cookies feel bad about themselves, you know. It's just not fair. And well, when you put it like that it sounds horrible. It's probably never occurred to him that he just might be the most permanent friend she's ever had besides her father and her tutors, and they were adults so they don't really count. "Nothing, just thought I'd come visit." No longer able to resist the pull of the treats she made two of them levitate and come to her instead of getting up to retrieve them. And Bruce was the only other person she could really use her powers around either. Everywhere else she had to be so careful who saw what and she just didn't have to worry about that here. That was nice too. "How much more until you're done?" The question was asked in between cookie munches.
Bruce. Bruce wasn't in the mood for cookies. He shrugged, pausing his erasing. "I don't know. I have a few more sentences in this assignment. Then I have math and stuff. And reading." He was in those accelerated classes that gave lots of homework. It sucked but it also kept his mind off things. He liked being busy. "Why?"
Zee. That was not the answer Zatanna was looking for, especially when she'd popped in from- who knows where? Bruce wasn't given a direct answer, only a grin as Zee spoke backwards words only loud enough for her to hear before all his books and papers rose from their resting places. Each object seemed to be animated with a life of it's own and they all danced above the two children's heads in an odd procession.
Bruce. "Zee!" Bruce huffed, frowning as his homework danced above them. It was becoming increasingly evident that he just couldn't get things done while she was around. So rather than fight, he resigned to his fate of entertaining her for the time being. "Alright, what do you want to do?" You have his attention.
Zee. He should know better than to ignore her by now. That just doesn't wooork Bruce. And well, first of all- "S'ecurb krowemoh eb enod." There, now he doesn’t have to worry about not finishing anything because she's distracting him! Another shrug. "I don't know. Anything!" Besides sitting here doing homework. "Let's go climb that really big tree." There were really nice trees around Wayne Manor and when was the last time he got out and played, anyway?
Bruce. He hates the sunlight, clearly. "I should probably change before we do something like that," he muttered to himself, pushing himself to stand up. He had learned to almost tune out Zee when she started talking that magic stuff -- so it will be a pleasant surprise to see that his homework is done later. Even if he will then feel guilty about it being done by magic and not by hand. He smoothed out his shirt. "Unless you want to go right this second?"
Zee. Is he turning into a vampire on her? Should there be crosses and vials of holy water nearby? Sunshine is good for you! And he can just work extra hard on the next day's homework to make up for it. Hopping up, she grabbed Bruce's hand, proceeding to do her best at pulling him out of the room and through the halls. "Yes, now!" Who changes clothes just to go outside? Come on, Bruce, stop being so stuffy for a few minutes. It could be amusing that the younger of the two seemed to be in charge here right now.
Bruce. Bruce let himself be pulled, his feet shuffling to keep up with her. He used to be more rambunctious, back when his parents were alive. He would have friends over and he'd play outside and all that. But since their death two years prior, he understandably lost that energy. It was nice having Zee around if only to get him to break out of that mindset. They chase down the halls before they break through doors outside. Actually moving to keep up with Zee got his blood pumping and his enthusiasm heightened. He was less being pulled and more chasing her now.
Zee.It looks like they're both the friend the other one needs, then. Zee had other friends- sometimes. Every time they settled during touring breaks she'd inevitably find one or two to start becoming mildly attached to. But kids- well kids kind of sucked in general, especially to newcomers they didn't know. And then it would be time for them to be on the road again and it wouldn't matter anyway. Once Bruce was actually keeping up she let go of his hand, determined to keep in front of him even though she was the smaller of the two. Once outside, she headed towards the first suitable tree in sight. In spite of how it probably sounded, she hadn't meant a specific tree but really ANY tree. Zatanna was kind of random like that.
