log: Kate Kane and Renee Montoya summary. [December 1999] Renee is invited to the Kane house for a little celebration of their daughter returning home for the holidays. She stomps out after seeing what Kate brought home--a boyfriend.
Kate. Kate Kane forced a small smile to her parents and Patrick -- the fellow sophomore from Columbia she had brought home for the winter holidays. It was her parents' idea that she invite that police cadet girl Kate seemingly befriended. Now, Kate excused herself and hurried to rush off after Renee Montoya, trying to intercept her in a secluded room. As she left, her parents said something about that poor girl, she must be so jealous. Little did they know, it wasn't far off -- just not what they would want or expect. Kate caught Renee outside the parlor and pushed her into the room, a desperate look in her eye. "Renee, please."
Renee. Jealous was almost spot on, though angry would have been a better choice of words. Kate and Renee's time was completely restricted to times she was home from college, Renee didn't have the money to visit. So the holidays were suppose to be their time together, even if it meant pretending in front of her parents for awhile Renee would be more than happy to see Kate. She didn't expect to see Kate and some...BOY there with her. This was her new boyfriend? Thanks for the heads up, Kate. Renee stumbles forward a little as she's shoved into the Kane's parlor. It doesn't take her long to center herself and turn back to Kate. "Please what, Kate? Please don't make a scene? Please don't walk out on my family and my boyfriend because it's very embarrassing for me? Please what!" Renee is breathing hard, she's trying to keep this down but it's not easy.
Kate. "Please -- please don't be mad!" Kate spits out. She takes a deep breath. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you -- I didn't know how. But he's just.. I'm paying him. He's a friend from college, and he agreed to do this because he couldn't visit his family and just. It's not like that. You have to trust me." Even though her parents are clearly crazy about Patrick.
Renee. Renee shakes her head. Don't be mad? How the hell can she ask that after what she just walked into. "Oh, so this was the better way for me to find out." Her coming in and find her with this college boy with his hand on her hip and hugging her to him. That was particularly nice to see. "...have you done anything with him." She might be paying him but like hell he hasn't tried to get something else.
Kate. "What!" She almost shrieks. "No! Oh my god how could you even think that!" Her breathing was fast and slightly panicked. This was not how this was supposed to go. "You know how parents can be -- I had to do something! Just.. to get them off my back for a little while. So we can continue.. you know."
Renee. "Don't even start to tell me how parents can be, alright? Mine are catholic." Even if she comes out their liberal friends will probably give them crap if they don't accept their daughter. Renee will be told she's going to burn in the pits of hell and be lucky if her parents ever look at her again. "Mm, and where exactly are they going to be expecting Patrick to stay while he's here." Renee crosses her arms as she looks at Kate expectantly for the answer. Because she already has her guess, Kate's room.
Kate. "In the guest room, duh! That's where he put his stuff." Though, in all honesty, if the two kids were to sneak into each other's rooms, the Kanes would turn a blind eye. It apparently was a relief just to see their only daughter dating a nice guy.
Renee. "So I guess I'm suppose to be fine with this then." She says it as it so clearly isn't okay with her. She's still angry, and how they have to now not only avoid her parents but now think of excuses to how to keep Patrick away to have their own time together. "Not duh. How do I know he's not going to try something!"
Kate. Maybe Patrick knows! Renee hasn't asked! "He's not," Kate insists, closing the distance between her and Renee. "Baby, believe me. Please." She reaches to grab onto Renee's arm.
Renee. "Oh right, because paying some guy to come and meet your parents and stay in a room almost next door to you is really something that someone can't twist around into something else." Renee takes a step back to force Kate to let go of her arm.
Kate. "I did it so they'd leave us alone," Kate lowers her arms to her side and doesn't move forward. "They're in there right now, aren't they? Leaving us alone?" And this was how Renee wanted to spend her time in the parlor? They've had some fun times in this parlor.
Renee. They have had fun times in this parlor, Kate's father's chair had become one of Renee's pieces of furniture. "How exactly am I suppose to trust that something won't happen when he gets you alone?" Even if he knows she's gay, like college boys ever care about that.
Kate. Her expression begins to twist into a glare. "How about you trust me to tell him no." Kate is still upset, but she was starting to get angry at Renee's implications. "I can handle it just fine."
Renee. "Oh, and I'm sure when he starts getting close while your parents are around I'm sure you're going to shove him away, right?" She'd like to know exactly how far Kate is going to go with this set up just to convince her parents.
Kate. That's when Kate's palm smacks right across Renee's cheek, the redheaded heiress frowning. "How dare you."
Renee. Renee's head jerked to the side as Kate's hand flew across her face. She hadn't been prepared for that, though no matter how bad the conversation was Renee would have never been prepared for that. She turned her head back to Kate and stared at her a moment. Though right now all she saw was a spoiled little rich brat. She gave herself a few moments to recover, when she did she didn't say a word. She gave herself a wide circle to walk around Kate so not to risk touching her as she went for the door.
Kate. To be honest, Kate was surprised she did it herself. She begins to panic as Renee moves away from her, unsure what she hoped to accomplish from that slap. "Renee, wait. Renee, I am sorry. I didn't mean it." She follows after Renee. "Renee."
Renee. Renee doesn't say anything in response, she just shakes her head as she walks down the long hallway to the door. She did mean it, even if she was afraid of what happened because of it, she did mean it. She reaches the door, twists the handle and let's herself out. She's not staying here a second longer.
Kate. Kate follows her down the hallways until she stops when Renee reaches the door. Her shoulders slump and she tries to keep a straight face -- that is, until her father comes out to see what was going on. She tries not to cry as she tells her dad they had a fight, that's it. But she knows better than that. That this is it.
