The fact that Bart knew something about what was happening was hardly a surprise to Serena. It wasn't like she knew him well or anything but she thought that Chuck who was his own son probably didn't know him well. Which made it a good bet that Lily didn't either. Despite not really knowing him Serena thought he seemed ubiquitous, with hand in every pot.
And rabies made a hell of a lot of sense. Serena's only experience with rabies had been as a very disappointed child at the end of Old Yeller. But just the thought of it brought the image of dogs snarling and drooling, going insane with rage.
There it was, the missing piece. Rage hadn't exactly seemed to be a component of anything Serena had witnessed earlier in the night. Those creatures had mostly been mindless automatons, eating people, tearing them apart without even a word. They were blank behind the eyes, not angry.
"Do you know if its happening outside the city?" Serena asked Blair. She'd been so intent on getting to the Palace and finding Blair that she hadn't even bothered to try the news or anything else. "I mean maybe its contained. Maybe its just New York." Which wasn't great for them but not necessarily bad either. If they could wait it out in the Palace eventually the outside world would come for them. But what if there was no outside world? She reached inside of her purse and grabbed her cellphone. She frowned when she saw there were no new messages even though she had left Lily and Eric a dozen or so.
