Blair took another quick swallow, frightened to realize just how close her best friend had been to being another of those creatures' victims. She shuddered, keeping her eyes on Serena as if she might disappear if she looked away.
"I don't know," she answered honestly, tilting forward slightly on the stool so that only Serena would be able to hear her. "It seems like Bart knows something... I heard a bit of his talk with Chuck on the phone earlier before he sent the car. I think he mentioned something like... rabies or a disease or something." It sounded so preposterous coming out of her mouth and despite everything, Blair hated the idea of seeming foolish. "There was even some talk of a quarantine."
She leaned back again, this unusually dire piece of gossip shared. "We're here now, safe and sound. That's the most important thing." She thought briefly of their classmates who remained uncounted for, but didn't let herself dwell on that depressing fact for too long. Everyone she really cared about was in this hotel or safely out of the country. What was the point of dwelling on other people's misfortunes?
"At least if we have to be stuck somewhere, we've all landed in a comfortable refuge," Blair added after a moment, trying to inject some cheer into her voice. She gestured absently to the room around them, the gleaming woods and polished chandeliers.
