Blair felt for one horrifying moment that she would burst into tears. Everyone was safe, everyone was here. For the first time in what felt like days, she even imagined she might be able to relax. Whatever insanity was happening on the outside, surely nothing could touch them in the Palace. She swallowed audibly, narrowly keeping her emotions in check. Bad enough she was out in public looking like this, the last thing she needed was to have a full-on meltdown. For once, she followed Serena's advice without question, taking a deep breath and then another.
She shuddered at Serena's next words, remembering the first, unfortunate driver that she and Chuck had discovered. "I know... it's-- it's crazy. It's all just crazy." The word felt utterly insufficient to cover the horrors of these creatures, but Blair's expansive, SAT-prep class trained vocabulary was failing her.
She managed a watery smile at Serena's quickly dismissed question. "I'm... really happy to see you," she answered, all thoughts of Nate or their hastily patched together friendship forgotten for the time being. "And I'd really, really like a drink."
