Chuck's pupils dilated just slightly at his father's next words, the closest thing to comforting he could ever remember receiving. He was so surprised that it didn't even occur to him to ask if his father was feeling all right. His jaw slackened just slightly in his shock, and inwardly his heart fluttered a little faster. Not only was his father telling him not to worry, promising that he would take care of him (and not in the bribery-and-blood-money sort of way), he was also implicitly promising to see him.
Granted, the qualifier on the sentence - see you when I can get away, indicated to Chuck that perhaps it was an empty promise, but even so, the past ten minutes of conversation had broken so much new ground that Chuck didn't dare either to believe or disbelieve what he was hearing. Ironically, his father's words made him wonder if this could be a dream or fantasy even more than slaying the creature that was apparently a zombie had.
"I will, Dad," Chuck managed to rasp when he'd recovered enough from his shock. And then, inexplicably, he added, "I love you." It was the first time in years that Chuck could remember saying these words to his father - the Bass men didn't say such things, particularly not to one another - and he was so horrified that he'd let them slip (in front of Blair, no less!) that he quickly added, "I'll see you soon," and ended the call before he could embarrass himself any further.
