Dan had never been a particularly over protective brother, but then he'd never experienced the horror of having monsters come after his baby sister. He clutched her slim arm protectively to his side, anxious to spirit her away from the chaos that had erupted behind them.
He accepted her profered phone almost numbly, gazing at it for a moment as if he couldn't quite recall its function. He nodded tightly after a beat fingers moving quickly over the contact desigated as 'Home.' For a tense moment, he thought they might answer but only the familiar pleasant voicemail message greeted him followed by a long beep.
"Mom? Dad? It's Dan... I'm here with Jenny. It's crazy... it's completely crazy. I don't know what to do but... I'll get her out of here. I'll make sure these things don't touch her just... call me when you can, okay?" He managed to leave this message with a voice that didn't shake, but his anxious gaze never left the door that they had come through, terrified that those things had followed them.
"Let's just get to the street... we can walk home if it comes to that," Dan said, trying to instill a confidence he did not feel into his voice.
