Damn it. There were some problems that even her heels couldn't fix apparently. She didn't even bother trying to open the door. If Carter couldn't open it with brute force than she didn't think she had much of a chance either.
The sounds of her classmates screaming were actually louder than the blaring sound of the fire alarm going off. Their horrified terror provided a ghoulish soundtrack as Serena stalked the hall right on Carter's heels, the two of them looking for a way out or for a way onto the roof.
After several minutes of looking through classmates to no avail, Serena returned to the stubborn door. "We need to find some way out of here. They're not going to stay on the bottom floor forever," she said, basically stating the obvious to Carter. When she ran her hands through her blonde tangles she realized her hands were shaking.
There was a window next to the door and she peered outside, looking at the long drop to the street below. Pandemonium was king down there, more of the crazed cannibal monsters chasing down pedestrians, knocking them to the ground and tearing into their delicate flesh.
"I think if we're careful we can make it onto the roof from this window," she said. It was probably the worst idea she had ever had but she couldn't come up with anything better. "We can help each other across."
With some difficulty she opened up the window and stuck her head out, looking at the distance to the roof. It wasn't terribly far, if you could forget about the long drop to the street below.
