Get out of here? Shouldn't they do something? People were literally getting eaten alive by some weird cannibal monster people. Their own classmates getting torn to shreds and Carter wanted to just leave? Leave them behind to fend for themselves?
But when he shook her, she felt oddly settled. She didn't have a weapon. How could she help anyone right now without getting eaten herself? She was contemplating this very thing as the zombie behind Carter moaned and reached out for him. God, how did these things not die from the smell alone?
Serena van der Woodsen had never kicked anyone before, had never really kicked anything either. But there was a first time for everything. She didn't have a weapon, save for the spiky heel on the end of her foot.
"Carter!" she yelled, shaking loose from his grip just in time to kick the zombie in the stomach. It didn't seem to have much of an effect on the zombie other than knocking it back a foot or two, which was all they really needed.
"Okay. You don't need to convince me anymore. We need to go."
She grabbed his hand and started towards the bathrooms. There was a window in the ladies room that she thought they could crawl through but by the time they made it there, the door to the bathroom was already blocked by two or three of the cannibal monsters having tackled one of her classmates to the ground. He wasn't screaming anymore, he just lay still as the zombies tore his flesh apart with their nails and teeth.
Escape now, freak out later, Serena reminded herself. "Come on." She pulled him towards the stairs hoping they could get up to the roof somehow.
