Who was this kid and what was he on? Carter was baffled by his antics, but it also was a hell of a lot more interesting than anything else going on at this lame party. Aside from talking to Serena, of course. He never got tired of seeing her, particularly now when she was all dolled up.
"Weird is an understatement," he answered with a chuckle, almost feeling sorry for the boy. School was brutal enough without publicly outing yourself as a freak. "Do you know him? I don't remember him from my days at St. Jude's." Not like Nate and Chuck who everyone at the school knew about, even as freshmen.
These random nostalgia-infused musings were cut short by the strange moaning sound that he began to pick up on from outside the foyer. Without making the conscious decision to do so, Carter found himself placing a comforting hand around Serena's upperarm. The moaning from outside had been creepy enough, but now it was matched by a strange banging at the door in the back of the grand hall. He was about to take a step in the opposite direction, towards the main entrance that Dan had just recently made his dramatic entrance through, when the shape of what was clearly a man appeared in the door frame. It was difficult to make him out in the darkness of the door, especially since his eyes had adjusted to the brilliance of the chandeliers inside. But Carter knew something was not right instantly,
"What the hell," he muttered under his breath, his eyes transfixed on the figure as it came a step closer and then another. The smell assaulted his nostrils and Carter tightened his grip on Serena, whether out of fear or protectiveness or both he could not say. He felt rooted to the spot, but not so lost that he did not look away to see that another figure had joined the one that was coming closer and closer.
