SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING

SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING

Monthly bonding is, as always, greeted with mixed enthusiasm. All the seniors will be taking boats out to Lone Wolf Island for a day hike, led by Mrs. O'Hare. There are storm clouds looming, but Mrs. O'Hare is certain that it's not going to be a big deal, and no gosh darn storm's going to keep her grounded!

Everything starts out normal enough, but unfortunately, Mrs. O'Hare's optimism has reached a little too far this time. An intense storm sets in, and the waters are too choppy for the students to return to the mainland. Mrs. O'Hare guides the students through the rain to a neglected old cabin.

"There used to be a mining camp around these parts!" she shouts over the rain. "This guy here's about all that's left. C'mon in, kids!"

Inside is musty, spidery and there's an angry raccoon that needs to be evacuated, but it'll do the trick. With the storm not letting up, it looks as though the seniors will be spending one very miserable night in this cabin with a dinner of granola bars, bananas and oranges. It's a tight fit in there, so everyone get to know your neighbors. Now this is what Mrs. O'Hare calls bonding!

THE HIKE: The earlier part of the day is a nice low impact hike around the island.

THE STORM: The rain hits hard, and everyone follows Mrs. O'Hare, who has an idea!

THE CABIN: There's a small cabin from the late 1800's out here on the island. Everyone crams inside and stays warm with heating charms and snugglepiles.

THE NIGHT: The seniors have to stay overnight. They manage to conjure up basic blankets and pillows, and warming charms are used liberally.

A NOISE: It's about 3:00 AM, when something slams into the side of the cabin, right by Robin Youngblood's snugglepile. WHAT WAS THAT?!?! [Character Y] screams as they see a man outside!! HE'S SCRAPING AROUND THE CABIN, HE'S TRYING TO GET IN, YOU'RE ALL GOING TO DIE. (After ten minutes of panic and shrieking teenagers, it's revealed to be a curious bear.)

THE MORNING: Everyone returns to Gooseberry, cranky but not much worse for wear.

Predictably, Cecil is making heart-eyes right back, he just looks a little more embarrassed about it and occasionally has to look at the ground and blush while they walk. On the flatter and more relaxed stretches of the trail, he even tries work up the nerve to take Levi's hand...though he never actually does it. Instead, he continues to walk side-by-side with the other boy, happy just to talk and take in the experience of the hike with him.

Unaware of the recent shift in the relationship between Levi and Chris, he isn't giving the Coppertale too much thought, though he may become a little more awkward and a little less certain if they end up walking near each other or exchanging glances.

Weird how they never end up near each other

No Chris is doing his very best to stay very far behind that weird heart eye shit Cecil and Levi have going on so it's okay no awkward moments. Cecil gets to be a totally oblivious bystander in all of this so he gets to enjoy the trip.

Levi enjoys the tension of almost-not-quite holding hands and his hand accidentally brushes against Cecil's several times as he drags out the moment. He keeps glancing over with a knowing smirk, then finally slips his hand into Cecil's once he can't take it anymore. Gross.

While they've held hands before (just not since becoming more than friends) and he knows that Levi is taking a good deal of pleasure in teasing him, Cecil still beams when their hands actually wrap around each other. Yep, it's going to be that kind of hike. At least until they get back into more difficult terrain.

Aaaaaand that's around when Diego takes off with some comment about how he wants to go say hi to, uh, hm, MINA. EXCUSE HIM, HE HAS TO GO DO HIS BROTHERLY DUTY.

Levi winks at Diego as he excuses himself, mistaking the TURMOIL OF HIS UNSPOKEN FEELINGS as Diego just being a total bro.

Once Diego skitters off, it's on. If he wasn't obnoxiously clingy enough before, he sure is now. He laces his fingers with Cecil's own and slows his pace so he can walk shoulder-to-shoulder with him. The conversation is kept light instead of venturing into mushy-gushy feelings territory, and he talks about his sister and how she had a good laugh at the pattern paper incident after he owled her about it.

Watching Diego go, Cecil frowns a little...not because he thinks anything is wrong, but because he knows Mina's going to be in a horrible mood. This isn't her sort of activity and, more likely than not, she's still mad about having her dance preparation time interrupted. But then he feels Levi's fingers intertwine with his and he looks back, blushing a little as the other boy slows their pace and draws them a little closer together as they walk.

Still, he's happy to keep it light too and laughs at mention of the incident with the pattern. His sisters, all three of them, had also found the story hilarious and had informed him that boys are totally hopeless. But it had turned out okay, anyway, right? Puffy shorts and all.

Laughter bubbles out of him, giddiness from their public display of whatever they are apparent in the pitch. He's completely forgotten about delicacy (that was fast) and wants people to make assumptions about them as his free hand comes to rest on Cecil's forearm. They may have been seen holding hands as friends, but now there is absolutely no question about the romantic nature of their relationship.

"I told her I thought the costumes pieces were in the envelope and I was mystified when I just kept pulling out more and more tissue paper. She lost her shit over it." He ducked his head, snickering. "But she said that she'll help us out next time if we plan in advance. This was apparently a lesson on why it's important not to wait until the week before Halloween. She sent us Muggle patterns on purpose."

Cecil doesn't laugh, but he does blush, shy as ever about these things but obviously happy. Happy to hear that light, airy laugh from Levi and happy to have the other boy's hand still caught up in his.

"Mission accomplished, then. We learned our lesson," he answers with a smile, "Well. Except that Trixie totally came through for us anyway." He pauses for a moment at the mention of 'next time', but doesn't actually acknowledge that the words made his heart skip a beat. Instead, he says, "That's nice of her. Thank her for me?" Another, less meaningful pause, then he asks, "What's the difference? With a Muggle pattern, I mean?"

Levi didn't give to much thought to the phrase next time. With perception skewed by overwhelming infatuation, there was undoubtedly a next time. Maybe their dog would even have a matching costume, too.

"Yeah, the only lesson I learned was to just get someone else to enable our
bad behavior. I don't know the difference between Muggle patterns and magic patterns-- I'm guessing the normal ones are less of a pain in the ass but it won't matter as long as we plan ahead so we can be lazy." Us. We. Our. "We can thank her by sending her a picture. She's dying to know what you look like after I told her all about us. I showed her one of the ones I had of you from last year, but she wants one in our costumes." Levi, in true Levi fashion, spoke casually while openly admitting he had already gushed to his sister about him. There was no shame in it. "I think she just wants to see if we're wearing the wigs and circle lenses she sent over. I already told her that was a no."

None of these words are lost on Cecil. Neither is the fact that Levi apparently told his sister about him. While the relationship between them might not be 'serious' yet...it's starting to feel very real. And he likes that. He's so lost in this thought that he almost loses track of what Levi's saying, then he blinks, "'Circle lenses'?"

"Oh-- yeah. She corrected me when I called them contacts. Apparently there's a difference. You put them in your eye, it changes the color." He shrugs a shoulder, giving a laugh, then turns his starry-eyed gaze back up to Cecil. "I love brown, though. Don't you?"

Cecil laughs quietly at this, looking into Levi's brown eyes with his own brown eyes and answering, "Absolutely. Think she'll forgive us?"

Levi leans into him, putting on his best soulful look as he gazes into his eyes and answers with a terse, "No," before quickly laughing. "Though I think the lack of wigs is a deeper sin. Maybe she'll be so distracted by our filthy, filthy, natural hair with all our filthy, filthy, natural oils, she won't even notice we haven't put plastic things into our eyeballs." He didn't know what the hell contacts were made out of, but they were Muggle and therefore plastic was a good enough guess. "I've never actually received a Howler before. It sounds sort of thrilling, doesn't it? Maybe we should just wear sneakers with our costume. That'll really get her."

This (probably) exaggerated assessment of Chelsea's reaction earns another laugh from Cecil and he shakes his head, giving Levi's hand a squeeze. "Want to tell her the camera broke?" he suggests playfully, "I'll back you up."

Levi's portrayal of her is extremely exaggerated, it's true. "All the cameras in the school broke, Chelsea. All at once. I'm sorry, but it's true. It was very traumatic. There was nothing we could do. But we definitely wore the fake hair and eyeballs you provided." Levi gave a sage nod, trying to force back a goofy grin. "Cecil can attest. He's the Head Boy, so he never lies."

"I don't lie very well, anyway," Cecil acknowledges with a lopsided smile, "Clearly. I guess we'll just have to take our chances." He pauses then, lapsing into a softer and more sincere tone as he adds, "Even if your sister ends up thinking we're ingrates...I'm really looking forward to Monday." The dance. The first date. The real start to all of this, maybe.

Levi snickers, squeezing Cecil's hand. "I think if she sees how cute you are, she'll be quick to forgive," he teases with a wink before bringing Cecil's hand up to press a quick kiss to the back of it. He's not thinking about where they are or who will see or if anyone will care. He wants a reaction out of him and so he playfully presses, "What are you looking most forward to, hmn~?"
