SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING

SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING

Monthly bonding is, as always, greeted with mixed enthusiasm. All the seniors will be taking boats out to Lone Wolf Island for a day hike, led by Mrs. O'Hare. There are storm clouds looming, but Mrs. O'Hare is certain that it's not going to be a big deal, and no gosh darn storm's going to keep her grounded!

Everything starts out normal enough, but unfortunately, Mrs. O'Hare's optimism has reached a little too far this time. An intense storm sets in, and the waters are too choppy for the students to return to the mainland. Mrs. O'Hare guides the students through the rain to a neglected old cabin.

"There used to be a mining camp around these parts!" she shouts over the rain. "This guy here's about all that's left. C'mon in, kids!"

Inside is musty, spidery and there's an angry raccoon that needs to be evacuated, but it'll do the trick. With the storm not letting up, it looks as though the seniors will be spending one very miserable night in this cabin with a dinner of granola bars, bananas and oranges. It's a tight fit in there, so everyone get to know your neighbors. Now this is what Mrs. O'Hare calls bonding!

THE HIKE: The earlier part of the day is a nice low impact hike around the island.

THE STORM: The rain hits hard, and everyone follows Mrs. O'Hare, who has an idea!

THE CABIN: There's a small cabin from the late 1800's out here on the island. Everyone crams inside and stays warm with heating charms and snugglepiles.

THE NIGHT: The seniors have to stay overnight. They manage to conjure up basic blankets and pillows, and warming charms are used liberally.

A NOISE: It's about 3:00 AM, when something slams into the side of the cabin, right by Robin Youngblood's snugglepile. WHAT WAS THAT?!?! [Character Y] screams as they see a man outside!! HE'S SCRAPING AROUND THE CABIN, HE'S TRYING TO GET IN, YOU'RE ALL GOING TO DIE. (After ten minutes of panic and shrieking teenagers, it's revealed to be a curious bear.)

THE MORNING: Everyone returns to Gooseberry, cranky but not much worse for wear.

RAVI HAS YET TO RUN OUT OF PEOPLE TO WORRY ABOUT, so hello Diego, how are you. He's glad to see that Diego seems cheerful today, and says so, with an unspoken note of "but how are you doing really."

...OK no, it's Ravi, that's not unspoken at all, although he'll put it more tactfully like, "Is the fresh air helping any in suppressing the revolt?"

Diego tries not to, but he likes the attention. He promises that he's fine now, so totally fine, you know? He's over it. What was 'it'? Nothing! His mom always says he has an 'artist's disposition'.

"Fresh air always helps," he agrees. "Although it's not like there's a lack of it in my life. Can you imagine the state I'd be in if I had to live in a no-maj city?"

Ravi doesn't know Diego that well, so he's willing to accept his I AM TOTALLY FINE's at face value. He laughs at Diego's question, because while Ravi lives in a small town, he's more or less right next door to NYC and thinks the concerns about city pollution are exaggerated.

"It's not so bad. True, there's not as many trees, but a No-Maj city offers a lot of things you'd never find out in the forest. Like... the city becomes a living thing in its own right, when there's many people moving through it and so much going on at every hour of the day. The density is fascinating. In the same city block, you'll find a brand new neon storefront, and also a building that's been standing for 100 years. Classical pianists live right next to rock stars. And when the leaves are falling during autumn..."

Ravi stops, and shakes his head with a rueful smile.

"But maybe you're right. Fresh air gives you more time to think and calm down."

Diego scrunches up his nose, remembering visiting Salt Lake. All the cars, the noise, the smells. "It's too much for me."

He pauses. "I'd love to hear the music, though. Live musicians are kind of a rarity. There are some local acts in Moab, but nothing like the massive concerts you'd get in a metropolis. But I'm afraid I'd just go and end up hating it. I don't know how muggles do it. Or... magical people who live in cities, too, I guess."
