POTIONS: AMORTENTIA LESSONS

All this week in Potions, Mr. Elmasry is instructing students in the delicate art of brewing Amortentia.

In his usual laid back manner, Karim sits on his desk facing out to the students as he explains the nature of the potion. Its effects are instantaneous and undeniably powerful, but it doesn't actually create "real" love (whatever that even is). Instead, the person who ingested the potion develops an intense obsession (and usually a physical attraction) to another individual. Obviously, it's easy to abuse. So, like, please don't take any of this out with you? Thanks, you'll make his life so much easier.

Amortentia smells different to each individual. It often has multiple layers of scents that remind the person of things that make them feel safe and comfortable, or things that they're drawn to. As well, yes, hints of people that you're currently harboring romantic attraction to, even subconsciously. Elmasry says that to him it smells like wet leaves, the Grotto, well-aged potion ingredients, and... some other stuff. OKAY EVERYONE, GET TO WORK.

This is followed by careful, precise directions on how to make this delicate potion. Elmasry will offer guidance, but Seniors and Juniors are expected to brew it successfully with little help. Sophomores and Freshmen are mostly just asked to give it their best. In case some people don't successfully manage to make their own, Elmasry will let everyone smell his expertly crafted test batch.

This event is taking place over the course of the week, from 10/24 to 10/28. All Potions students will have a chance to brew and smell Amortentia during their regularly scheduled classes. Enjoy all the awkwardness that comes from getting a big whiff of your heart's (current) desire.

If your character does not take Potions but is still curious, Elmasry might indulge them and let them smell his test batch if they're polite.

You can go ahead and respond to this post with what Amortentia smells like to your character, what their general reaction to it was, and what they told their classmates. Optional: You can also note what scent(s) might be associated with your character, in case they have any admirers.

For reasons, please do not have your character drink or steal any of it. For one thing, they'd be in big trouble. Don't worry, I know what you're thinking, and your chance will come... later. ♥

Ok, so, Riley's not in potions (lol she dumb), but I want to know hers anyways, so she probably had detention and then was like, oooooh, someone just went in the pretty potions prof's room, does this mean ogling season is open???

And then it turned out it was just this thing but it looked cute and also looked like something that would be all about her, so.

Riley smells cherry lip gloss, raspberry lotion, coffee, cigarettes, her cheer uniform after practice, cinnamon, whiskey, grapefruit, twizzlers, campfire smoke, a familiar cologne she can't place, spruce trees, and mud. She's honestly overwhelmed by the mix of smells and can only place a few of them with people or memories (she smells grapefruit in their dorm a lot???), but what she basically gets from the experience is that she crushes on literally everyone. Possibly including herself.

RILEY'S SMELLS: hair dye, fruity wine coolers, dry shampoo (acai scented, but it mostly smells like chemicals), wild strawberry lip balm, a grass-stained cheer uniform, and cotton candy perfume.

Sy doesn't take Potions, but he wanders by because... IDK HE'S CURIOUS OK. HE'S GOT A LOT OF FREE TIME ON HIS HANDS NOW.

If he wanted something insightful, he doesn't get it. Everything about Amortentia smells like Quidditch to him: the fresh-cut grass of the pitch, the sharp clean scent of the air high above ground, the oiled leather of well-worn gear, broom polish and wooden twigs and sweat and blood. When Sy lingers, he finally catches something else: the salt of ocean, and the hot sun beating down on the sand.

NO ONE WANTS TO SMELL SY but he basically smells like... dirt and sweat, some kind of woodsy cologne (cedar, maybe?), broom polish and linseed oil, and the leather from his favourite Quaffle.

Ryan is in Senior potions!! (I don't have a timetable handy to know what day/time that is BUT YES)

He finds himself a little skeptical of the whole 'love potion' thing, but he is rather good at potions and doesn't want to fail out so he completes it without (major) complaint.

To him, it smells like lilies (which are a memory from his time visiting the Gardens of Versailles when he lived there), fresh baked croissants, the Parks house, peaches, vinyl, and...licorice mixed with sage? He shared all but the last two (plus the explanation of the lilies) with the class without issue.

Ryan's smells: Metallic (like something you'd smell around guitar strings or in a music store), coffee, his deodorant (which has a wood meets dark vanilla scent), and maybe his hair gel in a light way?

Vee is in Junior Potions!

She can't hide her excitement over this lesson. Not just because it's something new, but it's amortentia. She sets to work eagerly, and though she has to redo once because she got over-eager, she wasn't too far along and finishes without anyone being any the wiser.

Vee smells: books (not old ones, like walking into a bookstore books), rain, gummy candy, the gingerbread scent associated with chai and cookies at Christmastime, the beach, a slight pleasant sweat-smell (weird) mixed with faint plastic that she associates with pom poms, and just a whiff of an unidentifiable musk that's earthy but light at the same time. She doesn't share the last bit with anyone, but only because she has no idea what it means. Everything else is wide open.

Scents associated with Vee: strawberries, a touch of cinnamon and ginger, orange mixed with honey (shampoo), and what can most easily be described as sunshine (though it's more a bright, clear day where it air is fresh with spring)

Rafael is in senior potions wed/thurs! He does't have much trouble brewing his potion and will help out neighbors. He'll also agree that love potions are incredibly sketchy if anyone brings the topic up around him, but he also thinks this is a fascinating class.

Rafael immediately smells pungent lime so sour it almost makes him wince, chocolate, the dance studio he practiced in with Sun-mi as a child, jasmine, sweet smoke like from a candle, and some athletic brand of women's deodorant. He shares all of this with no visible hesitation.

Scents associated with Rafael: camphor and menthol from topical painkillers, a citrus cologne, and athletic guy sweat if you catch him post-dance and pre-shower.

Susana is in Sophomore potions!

Her potion making skills aren't the best, but she is only a baby sophomore so. She makes do with help from friends or Elmsary himself. But she was pretty pleased when she managed it.

To her, it smells like: Freshly cut grass, that fresh clean scent you get when you're up high in the air, the components of a broom, leather and rubber (from the balls used in Quidditch), that electric smell you get around theater lights, charcoal pencils, paper. She tells everyone these things without thinking anything of it.

She smells like: Cherries, an earthen dampness that comes from getting dirty during a sport rather than anything gross, faint acetone from her frequent manicures, spun sugar and anise, and a spiciness that's not easy to categorize

Cecil is a senior and has Potions twice a week, on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday mornings. It's one of his stronger subjects and he manages to brew the Amortentia without too much difficulty.

To him, the potion smells like honey, clear morning air, summer flowers, cedar, baking bread, and the incense that's always burning in the Divination classroom. Within all that, there's also Levi's scent: sandalwood and eucalyptus and something else he can't quite place mixed with the faded smell of cigarette smoke. This realization makes him blush and smile at the floor. He'll be open with his classmates about how the potion smells, but he's not going to spell anything out for anyone. Though, his body language sort of speaks for itself. At least he knows the potion came out right?

Scents that others might associate with Cecil include: honey and beeswax (because of various homemade soaps and lotions and potions), a subtle amount of a warm cologne (there are notes of citrus and ginger blossom, among others), the outdoors, baking (especially sweets), and hot tea.

Chloe pipes up with questions about amortentia and sexuality. Can it be used counter to someone’s sexuality - to make a homosexual woman have romantic and sexual feelings about a man, for example? What happens if it’s used on an asexual person, would they only develop romantic attraction? Could an asexual person dose themselves to sort of create sexual feelings if they wanted to pursue that kind of relationship (... she has a lot of questions, sorry, don’t feel like you have to answer them)? Also, she is enthusiastic that it’s okay to be gay/bi/pan/ace/etc, she doesn’t think anyone needs to change, she’s just curious!

Chloe smells: Sweet tea, freshly laundered sheets, pink silk tree/mimosa blossoms, s’mores and hot chocolate, hay, cotton candy, crayons. She’s open about everything she smells in class.

Smells associated with her: Sugary-fruity-candies (Skittles, probably), colored pencils and acrylic paints, some kind of peach-honeysuckle-y perfume, hair dye, Mountain Dew (the soda).

Quinn's in senior Potions and she, uh, needs a bit of a hand. But at least she wasn't afraid to ask for help!

Her potion smells like fresh cut grass, coffee, a crisp and sudden assault on the nostrils (who knew ice had a smell?), sandalwood, ~~Rafael's cologne,~~ musty-but-not-mouldy library books, and maple syrup. One obvious scent is omitted in public.

Meanwhile, Quinn smells like lanolin (think wool; potentially wet wool), sweat from a workout (but NOT old hockey gear sweat, ugh), the mousse solution she uses before straightening her hair, maple syrup, steel, and that fresh water scent you get from standing beside a waterfall.

Kurt wanders in because he's just so curious ~~and also he's going to a dance with a girl for the first time and he has no idea what he's doing so smelling a love potion seemed like a REALLY GOOD IDEA, OKAY~~.

As he leans over apprehensively, he smells... raspberries, woodsmoke, the cedar-chip scent of an heirloom quilt, a weird plastic smell? (he isn’t familiar enough with electronics to know ‘new gadget smell’), the stables back home, the Gooseberry stables (he insists they're different smells, and no, it isn't "manure smell"), Pop Rocks, and cheeseburgers.

Scents incorporating Kurt would probably have cedar, mountain-laurel, that weird lived-in smell a theatre gets when its doors have been closed for the weekend, hay, saddle leather, and woodsmoke.

He leaves more confused than he arrived.

Ursula is in Junior potions and manages to brew her potion without tooo much trouble.

Her potion starts out with nice straightforward scents like soap, fresh coffee, and ink, but rather than following up with some nice Italian leather and money, it veers off into stuff like fresh air, cut grass, sweat, wet leaves, and possibly.. fried food. She abruptly stops listing the smells after 'fresh air', wrinkling her nose and maybe even blushing the slightest bit. Stupid hippie school.

Smells associated with Ursula: clean linen, her shampoo (coconut and hibiscus), her lotion (rose), candied oranges, and ink.

Okay, but seriously he smells gunpowder, cigarette smoke, Gatorade, morning dew, the plasticky smell of cracking open a new DVD or video game, Red Bull, Jack and Coke, wet soil, and a different kind of smoke... maybe the kind that comes from soldering?

You don't want to smell Robin. But fuck you Ima do it anyways. Robin's smells would be American Spirits, sweat, some horrible overwhelming Axe body spray, whiskey. YOU KNOW, STUFF.

Maggie takes Senior potions, so on Wednesday and Thursday. She's a bit slower at brewing her potion than others and people are already chattering about their scents as she's putting the final touches on it, but it comes out well in the end.

It smells of the apple cinnamon scented potpourri they use in her home. It smells of her mother's perfume and her father's aftershave and her little sister's favorite shampoo. There's Cricket and Nate: vanilla and brown sugar, Nate's boysweat covered by a generous layer of his No-Maj brand deodorant. There's fresh parchment and drying ink and that musty old book smell. She can smell the gardens and Hightower and it smells like safety and acceptance and hot tea.

Then, so distinct and still so intoxicating, there is the former Head Girl and her former flame, Anjanette. Her expensive jasmine-scented perfume, specifically on the dip of her collarbone where her scent and body heat would mix. There is her nail polish, her slew of beauty potions, her hair after being tirelessly pulled through the straightening iron. The harsh scent of potions overwhelming her perfume after a day in the lab.

Just as Maggie took her time concocting the brew, she takes her time smelling it. She readily reveals her scents to anyone who asks, but keeps the last bit to herself and her Platinum Trio.

Maggie smells like: A high-end perfume for witches with primarily sweet floral notes. On casual days, the wizarding equivalent of B&BW's sweet pea scent as her body lotion. Lemongrass scented shampoo and body wash. Face creams. Hair spray.

Sun-mi is in Senior potions and it's easily her least favorite class. She knows it's also a sore point for Ravi, so she'll pester Rafael for help instead.

Once her potion is ready, she smells warm tortillas, rosin, her childhood dance studio, dragons (idk, extra large sweaty horses + burning? lots of burning), the woods, dulce de leche, and peach blossoms. She also gets a strong whiff of generic girl perfume, ~~and also some less generic Etta perfume~~.

Smells associated with Sun-mi: worn-out ballet shoes, nail polish, post-dance sweat (depending on the time of day), menthol and camphor topical ointment, and rhubarb. ...okay she maaaaaybe smells like a girlier version of Rafael.

Cole is a sophomore and has Potions on Monday afternoons and Friday mornings. Annoyingly adept as always, he completes the potion after skimming the instructions and it turns out perfectly. How nice for him~

To Cole, the Amortentia smells like ink and paint, nighttime, Leonora's musky feathers, his stepmom's garden, Lake Gooseberry, and Zoey's hot chocolate. He offers all of this without hesitation and gives anyone that might 'ooh~' or 'nudge nudge' over the mention of Zoey a truly perplexed look. Zoey's hot chocolate is the best on a cold night and it's why Ribbonfin is the place to be, guys.

Smells that others might associate with Cole include: mint leaves, ink and paint, Sharpie, citrus and cloves (subtle and the result of cologne), and sometimes owl. After there's been an owl in his hoodie.

Casper is a junior and he's got Potions on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons. He's a decent student in Potions, but finds the whole 'love potion' thing a little gross and goes through the motions with a bit of grumbling. It takes him a while, but it turns out fine.

For Casper, the Amortentia smells like the ocean, old books, smoke, and jasmine perfume (this is a smell he associates with his mother prior to her injuries). He also smells the scents that he associates with Katya Ivanova. He's not inclined to be open about any of this and won't offer anything to is classmates or his teacher unless Mr. Elmasry presses the issue.

Scents that others might associate with Casper include: leather (it's all those jackets), Pipe Bomb (an odd and androgynous scent that has notes of salt water, metal, and amber), spice, and sometimes boy sweat (he's an active guy, after all).

Tess has questions about the legality of love potions, laws about them, how they’re monitored, and if law enforcement can test for them. She’s testy with anyone trying to chat with her about unrelated stuff, but happy to help anyone who’s struggling. She manages to brew her own without too much trouble, though she asks a couple of clarifying questions.

Tess smells: Dandelions, well worn leather sports equipment, grass and dirt the way they smell in the morning when the dew is still on the ground, ocean, lemongrass, warm fresh bread, something “sweet and floral, just like, a pretty flower smell” that she doesn’t know the word for.

She’s open about what she smells, but not very friendly if anyone wants to delve into what all those scents mean.

She smells like: Highlighters and new paper, clean sweat, something like cookies but not quite (possibly recognizable as raw cookie components: flour, brown sugar, vanilla extract, etc), some sort of very mild scented deodorant.

Katya is in Junior potions so she's not too terrible at this and manages to make hers without too much fuss even if she's not 100% sure what she is going to end up smelling down to a littlest bit of anxiety because who the hell knows what your heart really desires.

After finishing off brewing her lovely potion, Katya takes a smell and looks a little confused, takes a moment and goes back to it. The overwhelming smell is nothing or at least seems like nothing until she has a moment to think. It's snow, the smell of it before it ends up falling to the ground and for the most part is just a strange crisp smell of nothing but obviously something. A bit of gingerbread but something slightly off reminding her a bit of both Casper and home at the same time. An underlying smell of honey mead and apples. Most of it associating with Russia or her family. For the most part, Katya would tell people it smelled of nothing and try to explain the snow bit most of all.

Katya herself is a bit of a mix of jasmine incense mixed with vanilla, a light smell of something earthy more towards a nice clean dirt smell, Darjeeling tea, lemongrass and clove. She tends more to a darker smell of perfume and tends to keep far away from anything too bright or citrus. And maybe a littlest things bit of clean bird feathers, thanks Mischief.

Trixie is not in potions but would have tagged along just for the hell of it also to annoy Robin and want to know what the hell the boy smells, even if he doesn't say anything because she's nosy as hell.

Once she takes a smell Trixie pretty much agrees that this shit is pretty accurate and would have happily let people smell what she smells if that was even an option. Smoke, gunpowder, pine wood, the smell of soldering metal together, if world domination had a smell it would be in there but for the most part it smells of concrete. Foam, rubber cement, a lot of fruit and a bit of salt water. Pretty much a lot of horribly gross smells that Trixie loves.

Trixie herself smells of fruit. Pretty much all the fruit. In fact the girl might as well just be fruit. Also coffee, a lot of coffee.

Faye's in Senior Potions, woooooo

Amorentia smells to her like fresh paint and 2x4s, gunpowder, barbecue sauce and clean sweat, cool water, broom polish.

Faye herself smells kind of like this. That's probably not her actual perfume because dude, expensive, and she's only 17. But I kept coming back to perfumes with grapefruit so that's definitely there, and I really like the idea of combining that with a softer floral and a little musk so BASICALLY maybe just pretend that this perfume is less expensive because it's probably perfect okay.

Micah takes sophomore potions on Monday and Wednesday. He's more interested in hearing about his classmates' scents than working on his own potion, and cheerfully teases them about who they might be smelling. He doesn't even get close to a working Amortentia potion, and goes to smell one of Mr. Elmasry's test batches towards the end of class.

Micah smells: almonds, fresh paper in a brand new notebook, the particular scent of 16mm film stock, the heat smell of a running film projector which then turns into the heat smell of a running motorcycle, the lingering gasoline in a makeshift garage, the Nevada desert at night, and what is strongly and distinctly his brother's favourite leather jacket (which currently sits untouched on the bottom of Micah's trunk). Micah is willing to share the first few scents, but immediately clams up when he distinguishes the rest.

Micah smells like: boy sweat barely masked by cheap deodorant (the only scented product he bothers to use), notebook paper and quill ink, old film stock, and grease from the wizard cameras he tinkers on in Artificing.

Pippa is in baby Sophomore Potions on Monday and Friday! She tried to follow the instructions to the letter, but she couldn't help adding in an extra clockwise stir at one point, and turning down the heat a smidge halfway through, just because it felt right. Her potion looked pretty similar to Elmasry's, and it smelled delicious, so she thinks she did okay!

Pippa's Amortentia smelled like meadows and long grass in the sunshine, the slightly rusty metallic smell of her bicycle back home, her mum's special vegan sticky toffee pear pudding, and... something kind of horsey? Is that hay and saddle leather? ;) She would've happily told her classmates about the first three, but only confessed the last smell to her close girl friends (while giggling and blushing madly, of course).

Scents associated with Pippa: her strawberries and cream shower gel, macadamia nut shampoo, the old ink and parchment smell of sheet music, mud, and guinea pig.

Henrietta doesn't take Potions, but when she hears about the Amortentia she's curious, so she goes along to flutter her eyelashes at Elmasry and ask him if she can have a sniff~

To her, Amortentia smells like freshly baked brownies, broomstick polish, the forest, and that uplifting wind-and-sunshine combination of fresh air. There's also a hint of warm skin smell, like when you wake up next to someone and you nuzzle their neck, but it's neither particularly masculine nor feminine.

Etta-scents include: her coconut scented shampoo and conditioner (it legit performs MIRACLES on her hair), dark chocolate, the leather oil she uses on her Seeker's gloves (gotta keep them supple and flexible!), freshly laundered Quidditch robes, and her perfume which she doesn't wear all the time but will spritz on before parties.

Levi Kramer; SENSORY OVERLOAD

Levi isn't in potions because it's too hard and he's too lazy. He does catch wind of it on Monday and drops in for it on Wednesday, shortly after the end of the Seniors' class, to see if he can catch a whiff before Mr. E cleans up for the day. Anyone can say their character stuck around to witness, if they'd like, since Potions is the very last class of that day!

He's already wearing his questionable street clothes, making him further stand out against his uniformed classmates as he makes a big show of his entrance by announcing: "I'm here to test my might against this Potion of Legend! -- Pretty please."

If Mr. E allows him to test his might, he begins predicting the smells to see how many he gets right. "Beecil, obviously. My dog. My family and their weird smells. Diego, Riley... Chris and Mufasa... Quidditch. The band room. The ocean. Is that too many smells?" Fuck if he knew.

But as he stepped up to take a whiff, the sheer amount of scents is overwhelming to the boy who loves too much. His Big Fat Crush had recently turned into full-blown infatuation, and Cecil is on the forefront of his mind. He can smell every detail he's associated with the boy: the scent of his cologne layered on top of the sweet honey-based soap he uses. His natural scent on the crook of his neck and into his hairline. Every variety of his favorite teas, each one of his cookies he's let Levi steal a bite of. The outdoors, but specifically in the edge of the forest where he keeps his hives. His uniform before and then after Cheer practice. The cardstock paper of his tarot cards and the earthy scent of the woods where he's watched him perform his readings.

Predictably, the scent of his dog's musk follows. His family, yes, and all their weird smells: his mother and the brine of the sea, his father and his recording studio, Lior smells of baby wipes and formula, Leib and Lavi both smell like weed, and his step-sister has an overly-sweet smell to her like fruity body spray. There's home; ocean waves crashing against the rocky cliffside, dry grass, island mallows, and torrey pine trees.

The Quidditch pitch and the musty smell of the locker room. The band room and all the instruments.

There's Diego's hipster smell, Riley's cotton candy and hair dye, Mufasa's general cat smell. And then there's Chris, and the all too intimate smells associated with him as well as the scents from their favorite rendevous spots. The smells of every Azurcrest girl follow, every person he considers a good friend, then each boy and man Levi has ever had a fancy for: each smell unique and distinct from the other. It's a sensory overload. His nose starts to sting and he can feel a headache coming on.

Finally, he pulls away with a laugh, rubbing his temple, and concludes, "I think I just smelled every person in the world, and then some. But there were definitely strong notes of Cecil."

Levi smells like: The faint scent of cigarette smoke trapped in his jacket. Axe's Deep Space body wash (black pepper, eucalyptus, and sandalwood). The fruity scent from his vape. Boysweat. Quidditch leathers. From parties: cheap beer, firewhiskey, and weed.
