JUNIOR MONTHLY BONDING

JUNIOR BONDING

JUNIOR EBONHIDES AND JUNIOR RIBBONFINS: Archery

At 4:30 PM, all the students walk out to the field for archery with Mr. Thorn, who explains that they’re going to have an exciting archery contest. Everyone gets three shots to prove themselves. The winner will be named Robin Hood, and will be given a hat just like the Disney character, and a bag of chocolate coins.

There will also be a prize for the worst shot, who will be named Sheriff of Nottingham, and will receive a sheriff’s badge and another bag of chocolate coins. Soon, the competition for Sheriff becomes as heated as the one for the title of Robin.

Winners will be chosen based on RNG with a dash of IC description influencing the roll. When you post your description of what your character did, please rate their personal performance on a scale of 1-10. If you don't include the score somewhere, your character won't be considered for either prize.

JUNIOR AZURCRESTS AND JUNIOR COPPERTALES: Egg Drop

Overseen by Mr. Oakes, the students are given access to the craft and (non-magical) artificing supplies to try and build a non-magical container that will protect an egg when they drop it out one of the high windows of the lodge. As usual, Oakes is fun and engaging, but for the round that “counts,” kids can only use what he gives them for their safety vessels. He later holds a “For Fun” round, where he allows magic and supplies anyone’s willing to sacrifice from their dorm rooms.

The winning team receives a set of plastic crowns, transfigured to feature an egg motif. (Winners will be chosen based on RNG with a dash of IC description influencing the roll. When you post your description of what your character did, please rate their personal performance on a scale of 1-10.)

Students are divided into teams of two or three. The teams are as follows:

Addy & Saira & Sy
Coralee & Olivia & Riley
Dom & Harriet & Reece
Katya & Reid

Ursula has not miraculously become an outdoors woman since the recent adoption of Wormsula. (Status update: Wormsula is still alive and very much still an inch worm.)

Archery looks easy. When it's her turn, she rubs her hands together and picks up the bow and arrow, mimicking everyone else's movements. She spends.. a very long time eyeing the target until someone [volunteer?] yells at her to get a move on. She snaps back at them and manages to NOT loose her arrow early. After a few more moments of eyeing and wiggling in preparation, she finally takes her shot... only to have the arrow sadly and gracefully arc its way a foot or so away from her.

SCORE: 5 for drama. 1 for athleticism.

You know who's mad she's not in Archery Club? ROSY IS. But, okay, it's not like she's never done this before, it's not like she can't figure this out and win this stupid contest.

Rosy puts her fucking Game Face on, takes a deep breath, and focuses the fuck in. But, like, it has been a while since she's done this shit, so she's not very steady and tbh her aim is mediocre.

SCORE: 7 but only if Sy gets docked a point for being a dick she won't accept a lower score than him

Nia's maybe done the whole archery thing once before. At a lodge somewhere where they had a petting zoo and waterskiing and a truly offensive amount of water-dwelling snakes. She wasn't all that impressive at it then - and she hasn't really improved too much in the intervening years.

She hit the target? Ish? Well, at least she hit it by the third try.

SCORE: 5. She tried, sure. But it's not her forte.

Clem's not in archery club, but she's generally athletic and aiming stuff at round targets IS her whole shtick, so she's feeling pretty confident and she takes her three shots with very little preparation or dawdling. Her first shot hits the target, but outside of the scoring rings. Her second shot is a slightly off-center bull's eye, and even though this was clearly random happenstance she spends several seconds bragging about it before taking her final shot, which lands in the 4 ring. After her lackluster final shot, she returns to bragging about that sweet bull's eye. Get ready to hear about this for the rest of the day, roommates.

SCORE: 7, on sheer dumb luck.

Clem rates this activity a 10/10 and would consider joining archery club.

Casper has never used a bow or shot an arrow in his life. Not once. But he's got plenty of upper body strength and impressive aim thanks to Quidditch, so how hard can this be? He slips the arrow neatly into place on the string after watching the instructor do it, gives it a few pulls to feel out the tensile strength, and then lines up his shot. The first arrow slams into the target quite hard, but is left of the bullseye. The second arrow does the same, but is to the right of the bullseye. The third arrow hits above the bullseye, making an oddly uniform triangle. All three shots are in the outermost yellow circle of the target.

Casper looks at this for a long moment, then shrugs, and rolls his eyes. He can't really be bothered to care. If he doesn't get riled up about Quidditch, he's certainly not going to get riled up about bonding activities.

SCORE: 7

Kurt's never touched a bow in his life, and as he approaches the activity, he looks like he really would have rathered it stayed that way. He is, after all, a pacifist; somebody who approaches all problems from a non-violent angle, and prefer not handling a weapon under any circumstances. He picks the bow and arrow up hesitantly, handling them like a venomous snake (except he likes snakes so not really), and sets up his first shot. His hands shake, the bow wavers, and not only does the arrow miss the target, but it continues sideways and hits the target of the student beside him. Inspection announces that this Kurt's arrow resides in the outermost ring.

He tries a second time, but his arrow falls three feet short of the target.

Kurt says that's enough, and prefers to sit on the bench and shout encouragement at his peers (or simply watch with an encouraging smile). He likes that part a lot more.

SCORE: 3 for shooting, 7 for team morale.

Sylla's enthusiasm is through the roof when she sees the bows and arrows, before she remembers she's never actually shot an arrow before. This prompts a bit of an internal panic, and she tries her best to watch the other students' technique before it's her turn. Her first arrow flies to the right of the target, and her second hits the ground firmly in front of it. Discouraged, she takes a deep breath and pouts, and focuses hard on the feel of the bow, the tension in the string, definitely overthinking it. She finally takes her shot and the arrow hits the furthest right edge of the target.

She tries to hide her pouting for the rest of the contest by clapping primly and politely for the other students, but is very down on herself.

SCORE: 2. She has a very long letter to write home after this.

Someone has to egg Holden on to actually enter the contest (volunteers?), because he's never done archery, and doesn't want to look stupid in front of everyone else. But he has a strong arm, good aim, and a steady focus, so he sucks it up and doesn't wimp out.

His three shots are in a straight-ish line off to the left of the center, getting closer with each one, but still not near bullseye. That's good enough for him, he figures, and mumbles "Probably just luck" as he hands off the bow. But secretly, he's very relieved.

SCORE: 7

Vee IS in Archery club, but we all know she's joined as many clubs as she can just because she feels she NEEDS to, so. She's not like Katniss over here or anything.

Ironically, her first shot she did shout "I'm Katniss!" before firing, though she hit the outermost edge of the target. Barely. In fact, it wobbled a bit and then fell off. Not able to deal with such failure, though she is laughing at herself, she takes her second shot a little more seriously. (Though does still shout "Take this, Gale" as she fires. Do we sense a lover of the books here?) The second shot sticks a couple rings outside the bullseye...on the target of someone else (FEEL FREE TO VOLUNTEER YOUR CHAR) Undeterred as usual, she sees this as progress since she's getting closer and becomes excited. She can feel the third is going to be the best. This time she yells "For Peeta!", just to keep with the theme. It must work because she hits just outside the bullseye circle. Close enough, and she's pretty pleased with herself. (And has a desire to watch Hunger Games now)

Score: 7.5 (the .5 is factoring in her Hunger Games fun ;D)

Chloe is in archery club, so she's not entirely a fish out of water (pun absolutely intended) in this activity. She's no pro, but this is one outdoor activity she doesn't dread. She counts that as a win.

For the first shot, she takes her stance, pauses for a deep breath, then looses the arrow. It hits the target, but barely. The second shot is better, but still not impressive.

For the last shot, she really wants to do well, because this is something, the one outdoorsy thing, she can do, so she closes her eyes and tries to channel Legolas, Katniss, Hawkeye, and Robin Hood.

Just as she’s about to shoot, something creepycrawly lands on the back of her neck and ends up inside her shirt. She shrieks and flails. In her frenzy, she shot the arrow off in a random direction, very nearly hitting the target - that is, if her target was [volunteer?].

9 for effort? Her second shot was maybe like a 6, but her third one was definitely a 1.

CORALEE, OLIVIA, RILEY: team we need a team name
[info]rageahol
2016-10-21 08:54 pm UTC (link)
First things first, Riley wants to name their egg. Her suggestion is Fernando.

Second, Riley is awful at this. She is a) flirting her ass off with Olivia, hey cutie, b) way too busy looking at what everyone else is doing and talking about how theirs is way better, and c) has no fucking clue what she's doing. She gets glue all over her fingers and there's cottonball fluff stuck in her hair and ugh she got it on her clothes she didn't wear the right clothes for gross stuff, seriously.

Third, she wants to name their safety vessel. Her suggestion is The Dropinator 5000.

SCORE: 2. She did, like, a little bit of gluing.

2016-10-21 08:57 pm UTC (link)
Well, sorry Reid, Katya has no crafting experience nor any real ability to make something but she will try her hardest if she doesn't get distracted by something else.

She will attempt to craft some sort of parachute thing out of whatever fabric she can get her hands on and maybe some terrible eggholding thing out of a balled up scarf/whatever can be found that is vaguely scarf like. This is really not something she's good at and wishes she could at least be in the archery one even if she's worse at that.

She's so sorry Reid but she gets about a two and a lot of broken eggs and a look of 'I'm sorry I'm so terrible at this also I have egg in my hair'.

OK, Sy is winning that crown, even if it's a stupid egg crown, because Stokers are ALWAYS WINNERS. (Thank god they're not facing off against Ribbonfin, or else he and Rosy would just be yelling smack talk about each other's egg carriers, aka their mother. /HIT) Sy also happens to be pretty good at Artificing (and also the only person on this team who takes Artificing), so he's FULL OF BOSSY OPINIONS about what they should be doing. He is... not so great at the teamwork. This team's safety vessel is going to be an IMPENETRABLE EGG FORTRESS.

He's maybe an 8 when it comes to skill and enthusiasm, but you probably have to dock him a point or two for being terrible at working in a team or explaining what he's doing ("no, look, it's not going to work that way, GIVE IT TO ME"). 8|

Team Dom/Harriet/Reece

2016-10-22 12:20 pm UTC (link)
Team, DOM IS INTO THIS. His working knowledge of physics and materials is pretty good (Artificing is a great class for him and his senior project will involve it), and he'll involve the team by explaining the pros and cons of each material before they even think about designing the carrier. Though of course, he'll 'guide' the conversation his way because that's how he rolls.

Score: 9 for skill, maybe 7 or 8 for teamwork because he's so certain his way is right, even if he does listen to what the others say.
