PUMPKIN CARVING PARTY




PUMPKIN CARVING PARTY

Following an unfortunate incident with magical fertilizer and an experimental variety of extra large carvable pumpkins, the gardens have been overrun by the gourds. Students that help to harvest them all get extra credit in Herbology, as well as the gratitude of Mr. Hightower (and Mr. Oakes who came out to help him).

Now with an excess of pumpkins, Mr. Hightower decides to hold a pumkin carving contest after dinner. The gardens are lit up with festive orange fairy lights, and there are pumpkins everywhere. Anyone who shows up gets their choice of pumpkin, which range from the size of a basketball to the size of a smallish toddler. Anyone who takes one of the largest ones will quickly discover carving them is more trouble than it's worth.

Participants and audience members will be served cider and pumpkin cream cheese muffins. Vegan options are available as well.

The rules of the contest are:
  • Individual contestants only.
  • You have two hours to complete your pumpkin.
  • You may not use magic for anything except lighting your pumpkins.
  • Hightower reserves the right to tell you if anything you're doing is too dangerous.
  • Gentle Ribbonfin-style trashtalk is allowed, but no sabotage!
There will be two winners, one will be an IC win, the other will be an OOC win.
  • Mr. Hightower and Mr. Oakes will pick their favorite pumpkin, and the winner will recieve a tiny vial of Felix Felicis, enough to last about one hour of luck. You're not allowed to use it before an exam or Quidditch match. Mr. Oakes jokingly suggests taking it before asking someone to be your date to the dance, and almost launches into a story about how that's how he met Aristotle, but Mr. Hightower affectionately shushes him.
  • Out of character, the mods will pick someone who wrote something we found particularly funny/charming/moving. That character will receive a meaningful interaction with the NPC of their choice.

Character Name: Robin Youngblood.
How did they perform?: Robin got disqualified. Technically he was cut from the running when he used magic to create a laser coming out of his Death Star pumpkin, but it didn’t help that he also destroyed [volunteer or NPC freshman]’s pumpkin with said laser. He was also most likely disciplined. Feel free to give him detention.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Sigh. It’s the Death Star.
Do you want your character to be in the running for the win?: LOL NO
Rate your character's performance: DQed. But his effort was like a 5.

Character Name: Trixie Armstrong
How did they perform?: Trixie and Robin, true to their typical interactions, trash talked the shit out of each other. As usual, it sounds like how the hell can they be like besties but this is just what they do.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Cthulhu
Do you want your character to be in the running for the win?: Um, yeah. Why else would she be here?
Rate your character's performance: Considering Trixie can pump out anything your mind dreams in less than a day, she didn't even break a sweat doing this. Impressive but maybe not the best even if she thinks it is.

Character Name: Katya Ivanova
How did they perform?: Katya, as usual, was distracted. If not by Riley, by Levi, or Casper (if he appears at all) or Ree, or okay really anyone. Her attention span is useless and she is still a tad jumpy after dark.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Space. Yes! She really did try hard.
Rate your character's performance: To Katya she did at least about a seven because she did do her best even if the pumpkin was kind of super gross and she didn't really like the insides of it.

Character Name: Sybilla Borgin
How did they perform?: Sylla spent twenty minutes summing up whether or not she picked the right size pumpkin, whether or not a certain design would be too ugly or frightful or garish ("no, a severed head is far too distasteful at the moment," she would tell herself), which ate up some of her time before she primly sat down by herself in the pumpkin patch and set to work. She wants to show off her knife skill, but doesn't feel she is particularly artistic, and sighed and pouted for a moment before her bright idea. Because things should still be pretty, after all, and she has been researching the Halloween and Day of the Dead rituals and customs of other cultures. She focused on her pumpkin, and got a bit stab-happy, but she was suitably happy with her performance when the time was up.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Because SO PRETTY, she says. Yes Sylla is all into the aesthetic of Dia de Los Muertos sugar skulls. She thinks it is certainly one of the more beautiful traditions to honour the dead that she has read about. And Tibetan sky burials cannot be well executed into the medium of pumpkin carving.
Do you want your character to be in the running for the win?: Y
Rate your character's performance: She'd give it about a 7. She nitpicks herself over the finer edges of the cuts and stresses over whether or not it is too simple, and then if she wasted too much time, but ultimately she is happy with how it turned out.

How did they perform?: Um he performed awesome until SOMEBODY destroyed the fruits of his labor. Chris was over here trying to get his artist on.
What does their pumpkin look like?: he was straight up making a Chucky

Rate your character's performance: It was a solid six at least until Chris tried to kill Robin with the remains of his slaughtered pumpkin and got disqualified and possibly in trouble?

Character Name: Riley Stamper
How did they perform?: Riley started OUT strong, but she’s so easily distracted. She tried to start a pumpkin guts fight with whoever was around her, lost track of time, and at about ten minutes to go she panicked and stuck some flowers and a bow on the unfinished bits. THERE, NOW NO ONE CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE, RIGHT?
What does their pumpkin look like?: She wanted to do something like this. What she ended up with looked a little more like this.
Do you want your character to be in the running for the win?: NO, SHE DOESN’T DESERVE IT.
Rate your character's performance: It started out as a 7, ended as a 3. So let’s go with 5 overall.

How did they perform?: Nate wasted way too much time trying to decide what to even make his pumpkin look like, and ended up going for creativity over skill. Also, his pumpkin kind of started falling apart, so he really had to get creative to keep it together.

How did they perform?: Laurel is actually pretty good at staying on task when something is fun/interesting/makes use of her talents. Precision is not one of those talents off the dance floor or away from her costuming shiz, but she takes her time here and does a decent job focusing and doing detail work. :u Robin's Death Star pumpkin cracks her up pretty bad, though. She giggles over it the entire time.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Something like this creepy cat.

How did they perform?: Rosy grabbed a BIG ASS pumpkin right off the bat. More trouble than they’re worth? SOUNDS LIKE A CHALLENGE. She was very focused, and had no time for your SHENANIGANS and HOOLIGANERY because this is a FRIENDLY COMPETITION which makes it SERIOUS.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Something like this but big. Really big.

How did they perform?: Herbology is a sore subject for Quinn: if she can ace all of her other classes, why IS IT SO HARD TO MAKE STUPID PLANTS GROW?! So she dutifully blocked off the time for the pumpkin carving party, and arrived with gusto.

Quinn was really, really looking forward to tearing into those dumb pumpkins with a carving knife. As she "carved," peers may have commented that they didn't know she enjoyed pumpkin carving so much. Oh, did she ever. The pumpkin was a resounding success for her frustration management... but maybe not so much in the attraction department; Quinn also doesn't have an artistic bone in her body (a fact of which she's fully aware).

What does their pumpkin look like?: I warned you she isn't artistic.

Character Name: Regan Hobbs
How did they perform?: Ree gets a little intense when she's Arting, and she had Grand Ideas about this. She also has very little pumpkin carving experience, so she was more ~intense~ and ~focused~ about this than she normally is. She took a little while to get started just because she was still trying to choose what she wanted to do, but once she did she was ALL BUSINESS. The chaos with the blasted pumpkin got a "can you guys quit it I am TRYING to CONCENTRATE over here!" and before long she moved over to the edge of the garden to try to find some peace.

But there is no peace at Gooseberry.

Anyway, when she finished she yelled "RAVEN QUEEN!" and danced around a little bit.
What does their pumpkin look like?: this, only less smooth in the scraped-out background area and with slightly more chunky feather-detailing.
Do you want your character to be in the running for the win?: SURE
Rate your character's performance: 7/8. She worked hard, y'all. DELICATE LINEWORK WHEN CARVING A PUMPKIN IS HARD.

Character Name: Kurt Wolfhart
How did they perform?: Kurt is happy! He's passably-to-reasonably artistic and is happy to be working with his hands. He's pleased with his pumpkin in the end. The whiskers didn't turn out, so it's a whisker-less mouse, but he doesn't mind! He does ask if he can save the pumpkin seeds and try to bake them or something.
What does their pumpkin look like?: He made a cute mouse!

Rate your character's performance: He was probably a 7 on the enjoyment scale, 6 on the pumpkin-carving-skill scale. He's not really performing, though, he's just happy.

How did they perform?: Gabi was mostly interested in talking to people, watching everyone else do their carving, and complimenting people's pumpkins. She told everyone she loved their pumpkin at least once. Yes, EVERYONE. And guys, you could tell that she meant it.

ALSO SHE BROUGHT JACINTA TO HELP INSPIRE HER.
What does their pumpkin look like?:Pretend that that's a chinchilla, y'all.

How did they perform?: Pippa worked away very diligently on her design, but she hasn't carved a pumpkin since she was a kid, so her technical skills are below average compared to these American pumpkin-carving machines. But she enjoyed herself, AND THAT'S WHAT COUNTS.

Character Name: Frankie Noble
How did they perform?: Frank marathons way too many episodes of Halloween Wars on the Food Network when she's at home. So she definitely spends a speculative and mournful few minutes staring at the gigantic pumpkins before forcefully changing her mind. And then spends another minute mourning the one pumpkin rule implied in 'pick A pumpkin.' (She could've made an ANGLER FISH, guys!) But she finally chills her bones, quits having an existential pumpkin crisis, and gets down to business. At which point she sits herself into a twisty little pretzel and concentrates like someone performing actual, life-saving brain surgery. Explosions are nothing. She probably has her volume turned way down. Arts and crafts are her thing.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Something like this.
Do you want your character to be in the running for the win?: Sure, why the heck not!
Rate your character's performance: I mean, grading is definitely on a curve here. She's good at this sort of stuff. A 7-ish, maybe. She could've picked a Halloween Wars worthy pumpkin, man. They were right there. Wasted potential.

Character Name: Levi Kramer
How did they perform?: Levi tried his best, but his best isn't very good because his drawings are shit and he knows it.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Levi carved his pumpkin in honor of Laika, the first dog in space, and her noble sacrifice. Except Levi is meme trash and Doge is very 2013 relevant so his pumpkin ends up looking something like this but in Levi's horrible art style. The stars surrounding the pumpkin look nice and are accurate constellations, but that's the only thing that looks nice. "WOW MUCH THANKS LAIKA" is carved out. (I'll draw a replica of this when I get home from work)

Character Name: Reece Downing
How did they perform?: He was very secretive while working on his pumpkin and hung out on the outskirts of the garden, facing everyone else, so they couldn't see what he was doing. He didn't take very long to finish his pumpkin, though. Cleaning it out took twice as long as the actual carving process. And he ended up COVERED in pumpkin guts. HIS IS A CHAOTIC GENIUS

How did they perform?: Ivy was SUPER DUPER focused on her pumpkin, which had a lot of fidgety little details. So she was so into carving that she was borderline comically unaware of the shenanigans going on around her.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Beautiful fireflies coming out of a jar! Really utilizing the light-up medium. photo.

Character Name: Diego Morales
How did they perform?: Diego got really into this whole pumpkin carving thing, although it's the wrong sort of artistic for him. He worked hard to keep his design even, but took too much time with all the chatting and food and socializing and asking other people what they were doing. As a result, he wasn't finished when the carving period ended. He laughed it off and kept working on his creation until it was done. The finished product is going to reside proudly up in Azurcrest.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Snek. More or less.

How did they perform?: Rafael showed up READY TO KICK ASS but he has to overcome the unfortunate hurdle of not being an artist. He's got a game plan, though, and spends the first half of the time period meticulously placing dots and measurements to NAIL THIS.
What does their pumpkin look like?: Celtic knot.
Do you want your character to be in the running for the win?: Nope I'm a mod.
Rate your character's performance: 7/8 for effort and precision, but honestly this just isn't his strong suit.
