I've found distracting you to be helpful. Too bad Rafael missed his chance to tempt you with a hickey if you stopped being a little shit.
I also use humor a lot to soften the blow when I can tell someone's first instinct is to spit back whatever I just barked at them. Sighing, shrugging, rolling my eyes is helpful for someone who wants a big reaction, and then they (sometimes you) get bored and move on.
Or, in the long run, maybe helping you to find a new communication technique/defense mechanism. If your current one is a problem, and it's been your only method for seventeen years, you need help figuring out what else is out there. Like how I found sarcasm after finding out I couldn't set Sy's bed on fire with him in it anymore.
