QUIDDITCH: March 5, Match #7

EBONHIDE

COPPERTALE

After a long, long winter, it’s finally starting to warm up in the mountains, and there’s a palpable buzz of energy as everyone piles into the stands. Is it anticipation for a highly anticipated rematch between the two most competitive houses? Is it relief from finally having something to entertain them, or built-up aggression after a week-plus without the magical journals? Or is it rumour and speculation over the unknown adults sitting in Headmistress Bloom’s private box? Coach Thorn has assured everyone that talent scouts won’t arrive until next week, but these smartly dressed wizards are seen taking notes during the game.

Regardless, the cheer squads won’t let a few extra members in the audience get them down. Captain Hawkeswood always has a fresh song pick for his well-trained squad, while Captain Powers remains bright-eyed and energetic despite having to plan back-to-back routines for her two squads. The plum- and rust-clad players circle the pitch on their brooms, casually throwing insults at each other, but they all come to attention when Thorn steps onto the field.

Chaser Guthrie shows off his speed by nabbing the Quaffle before anyone else can even touch him, and he’s zooming down the pitch with Stoker and Turner behind him, who spread out to block the paths of Ebonhide’s Chasers. Guthrie wins the first goal for Coppertale before sixty seconds are even up, but the Quaffle goes to Chaser Decourt next, and Ebonhide refuses to let themselves get out-flown again as they work together over the next ten minutes to fire goals past an apparently frazzled Keeper Velasquez, stealing a 30–10 lead for Ebonhide.

The Golden Snitch makes a surprise appearance right off the bat. Neither Seeker wants to take the win so early, but Seeker Hale flies closely after it, still stung from her failure to catch it last game. Seeker Wainwright’s on the side of the pitch, so Beater Park has to take his attention off the Chasers to throw Hale off the trail with a Bludger. She veers sharply to avoid getting hit, aided by some quick flying by Beater Kim, whose bat slams the iron ball back towards Coppertale, nearly clipping Chaser Stoker in the head. Wainwright finally catches up, reaching past Hale for the Snitch—and he knocks it with the back of his hand, redirecting the Snitch below them and out of their sight.

Still riding high, Chaser Webb dodges the opposition to send yet another Quaffle at the Coppertale hoops, but Velasquez dives to knock the ball away, and back into the hands of Guthrie, who flies the Quaffle around Fiori’s Bludger and into Stoker’s hands, securing another goal for Coppertale. Stoker’s changed his usual strategy to focus on scoring instead of assisting, but even with the three of them working in tandem, they keep lagging behind the other team. Neither side lacks for aggression, but Decourt, Quayle and Webb have been playing together longer, and their teamwork’s markedly improved since their first match. Almost 45 minutes in, it’s 60–40 for Ebonhide, also in part to Keeper Raza providing a reliable, methodical defense throughout the match. He’s more experienced than Velasquez, and it shows.

While the Chasers grapple for the Quaffle and the Seekers buy time, the Beaters are trying their hardest to get the upper hand, but the pairs appear evenly matched as they switch control of the Bludgers with every minute. The match turns when, just 10 minutes short of the hour mark, Fiori intercepts a Bludger from Park, and shoots it across the field to Kim, who aims it precisely at Turner, striking her in the shoulder and knocking the Quaffle from her hand. Chaser Decourt catches it and rockets down the pitch towards the enemy goals, which leads Raza to let down his guard. While Decourt’s passing to Quayle for another goal, the other Bludger’s swinging into action all on its own. Fiori sees it soon enough to speed for the Ebonhide goal posts, but not soon enough to stop the Bludger from crashing into Raza from behind, knocking him half off his broom. Although he doesn’t fall, he wrenches his arm badly grabbing for a hand-hold from a goal hoop, and has to let a reserve sub in.

With Reserve Wilde at the goal posts, the Coppertale Chasers begin to catch up. They’re aided by a few nicely coordinated shots by Beater Barringer, who breaks up Ebonhide’s formation and grazes the back of Quayle’s head with a Bludger. Still, Wilde’s holding his own, and it’s not until 15 minutes after the hour that the game is tied for the first time, at 90–90. Turner’s flying slower from a bruised shoulder, but she’s compensated by Velasquez, who seems to have shaken off whatever had her stumbling at the beginning of the match. Webb breaks the tie, but Velasquez blocks the next two shots by Decourt, giving Guthrie the chance to catch Coppertale up not ten minutes later. It’s coming down to the wire.

Up high, Seeker Hale is trying to look past all the swiftly flying players to find the tiny flash of the Snitch. She finally spots it fluttering just behind Beater Kim’s head, and aims for him like a rocket, even as he readies his bat to intercept a Bludger. He swings—then pulls back hard at the last second, as the Snitch dives in front of his face. The Bludger sails past his shoulder, the Snitch continues to dance around, barely avoiding contact with Kim, and Hale stretches a hand out towards him—only to get struck in the arm by Barringer, who took the Bludger which Kim missed. Hale pulls back with a hiss, and switches to her other hand, but then Wainwright’s there, and they’re both following the Snitch as it flees away from the Beaters, and past the other players. Turner, reaching out and missing a catch. Quayle, stealing it and readying a pass. Stoker, slamming into him from the side and elbowing him in the neck. Hale tries to shove at Wainwright with her uninjured arm, but he keeps pace with her. She pulls herself ahead on her broom, and he leans into it, with a longer reach. They both hear an explosive cheer from someone making a goal, but neither of them check who, because the world’s narrowed down to just them, their rival and the Golden Snitch. She throws herself forward. So does he.

When the two Seekers finally break apart, Hale’s gloves are empty, and bright metal wings are flapping from between Wainwright’s fingers.

Leo will be drowning in in the shower now please God. (But really he is not happy and it is all his own fault.)
He blames himself entirely for Kazim's injury, and for not stopping the Seekers during that goal. And for everything. And don't think he didn't see those people taking notes. He is sportsmanlike enough to say "good game" to notably only Sy; he would normally congratulate everyone but can't quite find it in himself today. He checks to make sure none of his team need to be seen by Mufferaw, and that Kazim is okay. He tells them to meet him tomorrow to go over this. And then he'll disappear to obsess about this until he has to be at class the next day. It's kind of nice that the journals aren't working; he doesn't have to see the gloating this way at least.

Rafael will come looking for him after the game, but if Leo needs alone time he'll (reluctantly) give him space. He was hoping today would be a better birthday for Leo than... this. For the occasion he had even completely foregone wearing Coppertale colors in favor of Ebonhide—a first for him.

Chris is a pessimist, so he didn't actually expect to win a second game in a row. Especially against the same team that fucking slaughtered them during their first game. This same team beat them by over a hundred points their first time. This wasn't exactly the crushing victory he wanted to serve back to Ebonhide. It came down to the snitch, and Chris doesn't believe a good team should have to rely on the snitch. But Coppertale is still playing catch up after their first two losses - which is proving daunting given how badly they truly lost their first game; even with this victory, they're still behind Ebonhide point wise - so he'll take literally any victory they can get. Even if that victory relies on the snitch.

When he lands, he's still elated, just not as overtly affectionate as he was the last game. He still tells the other team good game, and he still finds Reid to give the kid a crushing hug because Reid went above and beyond this game - he did so good. Roxie also gets a very affectionate hug because this girl - with her abruptly trying to break peoples arms at perfect moments - Chris has never felt so proud of another person before.

In the NECK, Stoker, you goddamn barbarian. I know all's fair in love and Quidditch, but goddamn. This game was brutal. Thanks for not literally killing him via a bludger to the head, though. Woof. Some close calls today. Ulysses lands a little shaky from adrenaline.

He's ... pretty gutted that they weren't able to snag a win; he wanted this one for a zillion reasons, including BETS and GENERAL TRASH TALKING, but especially because it was their captain's birthday. Honestly, Ulysses feels like this loss is a genuine injustice on the part of the cosmos. They were supposed to win this one, he's sure of it. Hope they didn't let you down too bad, Leo. He really did try.

At least they played hard. The RP gods listened to my prayer. The Coppertale team gets a few hearty congratulations and slaps on the back from him, despite his profound disappointment. And Wilde gets a sweaty side hug, sorry bro. Amidst the post-game brouhaha, he looks around for Leo and ????. Where did —? :(

His other reactions depend on how well he played personally, and how jocular vs. antagonistic the Coppertale team is feeling. The range is from "aggressive pouting interspersed with laughter as he forgets he's supposed to be pissed off about this (good game, y'all!)" to "actual hissy fit." Hopefully, not the latter.

A familiar (and not always welcome) figure is lingering outside the Ebonhide locker room. She's looking as casual as someone possibly can while clearly shooing away all the other players and (most of the) cheerleaders, waiting for one person in particular. When she sees Ulysses come out, she gives him a little wave.

"Hey there, hero," she greets. "I like a man who can take an elbow to the throat."

While normally exuberant regardless of whether they win or lose, Solomon finishes this game disappointed. He still tells the other team that they did good but he looks notably down. He doesn't hang around like he usually does but he doesn't storm off either. He feels like he could've performed better and he let Leo down on Leo's birthday.

A Tale of Two Fan(atic)s (Rosy & Quinn)
[info]qnnc
2017-03-07 02:30 pm UTC (link)
It was fate: two defectors from disparate houses meeting in the stands, one donning subtle earrings, the other bright headgear. For a brief moment that could be nothing short of predestined, Roxie's Bludger aligns perfectly with Dahlia's hand as the turncoats' voices align in perfect unison, like the stars.

Everyone in their vicinity can hear the roar, two voices at once: "TAKE HER THE FUCK OUT!!!"

In awe, they turn to each other. They high five hard enough to feel it hours later. They nod, and they turn back to the game.

Thus, an unbreakable bond was formed.

Wilde
[info]destructobot
2017-03-07 02:40 pm UTC (link)
Wilde shows zero emotion at being placed into the game, though his heart goes a little fluttery. That goes away... quickly. He's proud that he was able to at least somewhat hold his own, but his expression grows grimmer and grimmer and by the end of the game he looks ready to actually kill someone.

When he touches down at the end he pats his team members on the back, throwing a curt little salute at Ana, and goes straight to the locker room without saying much of anything to anyone.

FUCK YEAH THIS WAS AN INTENSE GAME.

Completely un-unpextectedly, Quinn's in the Coppertale section of the stands, wearing her hat (or clutching it from time to time) and hollering so loud that she loses her voice until sometime tomorrow. At one point she and Rosy get over whatever differences Alex and I didn't realize they had.

At the end of the match Chris gets a bear hug! Coppertale gets congratulated! Actually, all the Team Gooseberry players get congratulated on an awesome fucking game and high-fived! As long as they don't look like they're going to kill her!

Leo does not get the high five. Leo looks unhappy. Quinn is not going to go there.

Clem resolved herself to being a good sport if she lost this game (she's taking the captain thing SERIOUSLY you guys), but she looked deeply unhappy as she touched down on the pitch after the match. She immediately disappeared into the locker room for awhile and then went back to her cabin to commiserate with Vee, who's the only person she complained to about losing.

If Coppertale has a victory party she shows up to that and is congratulatory and surprisingly not a total bummer to be around. If they don't, she's in much better spirits by Monday morning and tracks everyone down to congratulate them in a friendly manner.

Team Gooseberry, get ready for the mega grind. Y'all better not lose this next match for her or she's dropping out.

This is a great deal more exciting than the last game. Maybe American Rules Quidditch isn't so bad. Dimi's on the edge of his seat the whole time. And then up on his feet and hollering along with people nearby as he watches the last stretch for the Snitch.

It's a nice bonding moment.

Kurt (... and Newt), briefly
[info]lovekurts
2017-03-07 07:09 pm UTC (link)
Kurt is not a Quidditch fan because he doesn't like violence. However, although he says (and thinks) that Newt 'found' the Snitch from the last match, what he actually believes, deeeeeep down, is that the niffler somehow caught it off the pitch.

Which means the niffler may be a fan of Quidditch.

And Kurt can't deny his new familiar a couple of hours out and having fun, right??? Maybe it'll help them bond! So he heads down to the pitch with Newt and [OPEN TO RIBBONFINS AND FRIENDS!], the niffler's activities limited by his halter and leash but also jazzed up in a sweater in Ribbonfin colours that was lovingly crafted by Ennis!

Newt is, indeed, fascinated by Quidditch... or at least by the Snitch. After thirty minutes Kurt realizes that Newt could be considered an unfair advantage (he's VERY good at following the Snitch) and takes him back to Ribbonfin.

Which is, like, totally fine, because the blood and thuds were already making the Ribbonfin queasy.

Casper still doesn't care about actually winning Quidditch matches...but he has come to care about Leo and seeing the other boy so disappointed and so disheartened after the loss makes him angry. Mostly at himself. Because he'd missed the Bludger and set Hale up to lose the Snitch. He's silent and seething after the match ends and, once he lands, he leaves without saying anything to anyone. He'll apologize to Leo later and maybe even congratulate Sy on the win. Maybe. But, for now, he just wants to be alone and go take this feeling out on the heavy bags in the weight room.
