MOVIE NIGHT

Susana Velasquez arranges for a movie night party in the lodge, because they just had something very special mailed to them: an R-rated movie. Susana pops Eyes Wide Shut into the DVD player, and the group settles in for a fun night. All’s going well until Ms. Vector walks in at the worst moment, just as the movie features a gratuitous scene with lots of full frontal nudity.

Someone shouts “RUN!” and students scatter to evade getting in trouble. Cole Moss and Calvin Evercreech end up hiding in a closet together.

The one casualty is the Eyes Wide Shut disc, which was not a questionable sequel, and therefore was mysteriously broken in half by the DVD player.

WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN

Despite the sophomores being adorably cliquish, this event is open to everyone.

The lodge is sparsely populated by staff this Friday evening, as the teachers are having a staff meeting.

A little over halfway through the movie, just as a particularly inappropriate scene comes on, Ms. Vector walks in on the viewing party.

Do you run, or do you stay and get lectured? There are no consequences for either decision as long as you're respectful to Coppertale's Head of House.

» Before the movie: Meet up with your friends, share snacks, claim the best seats.

» watching the movie: Shh, it's starting!

» elsewhere in the lodge: Since there are so few teachers around, is there anything else you rascals are up to? Classrooms and club rooms are all still locked, though.

» run!!!: ... Or don't. Ms. Vector is certainly scandalized to have walked in on such a racy scene, but the most the caught students will get is a lecture on propriety.

This bright laughter, sudden and uncontrolled, interrupts any answer Cole might've otherwise given and he smiles broadly. He doesn't know why he's doing it, exactly, but he likes seeing Calvin in high spirits. Then he shakes his head, responding to the only reason he can think of that'd prompt the other boy to apologize for that cheerful sound, "Don't be sorry. Nobody will hear with the charm up." Pausing, he brushes back a bit of his dark hair and tucks it behind his ear as he considers the film. And older brothers. "What sorts of questions? ...I can't imagine Nate owning anything like that; he got mad when I took a life drawing class last summer and that's just one naked person at a time."

Ah, yes, Nate. Nate who Calvin has a sort of understanding with. Nate who is very protective of Cole. Nate who is so protective of Cole that he objected to life drawing lessons. Calvin feels immediately guilty for the times he's admired the line of Cole's shoulders or...

Nevermind.

"Is Nate particularly, ah, against you..." Looking at naked people? Oh, no, no, that's not... that's not the question Calvin wants to ask. "He seems very protective of you. Like if you ever decided to date someone, he might not like it much."

This silences Cole for a moment. The assessment of his brother isn't wrong; Nate is very protective of Cole. Because he doesn't think that he understands anything that matters or that he has the emotional fortitude to deal with anything real or that he has enough sense to get out of the rain. Sometimes he's right. But it's frustrating. The boy's dark eyes flick down for a moment and he fidgets with the hair that he'd just tucked behind his ear. "No. He probably wouldn't," he admits, "He wouldn't like it very much at all."

When he looks up again, his smile has faded and he looks earnestly at Calvin. "But that's my decision. Not his. Okay?"

Calvin finally meets Cole's eyes, and nods, very seriously. He sometimes wonders how often Cole's given time and space to make his own decisions. Calvin doesn't always help with that. He's quick to provide answers and give direction, but Cole's assertion that if he dates or not is his own choice is good. Something in Calvin's heart unknots itself.

"Okay," Calvin echoes. "Have you ever dated anyone?"

Looking back at Calvin, Cole lowers his hand and gives his head a little shake. No. He's never dated anyone before. "I've never liked anyone before either, though," he points out slowly, "Except Coralee. I guess." There isn't much time for the other boy to wonder whether or not this is the answer to his question, though, because Cole then moves to take his hand and adds, "But I like you. Calvin."

Calvin's not expecting Cole to take his hand, and it makes his heart start to beat quickly all over again. His mouth feels dry, his head spins. He wonders if he's dreaming, or maybe just misunderstanding the direction this is going. Waiting for days for Cole to think was tolerable, but these last few seconds feel like too much.

"I like you too," he says in a quiet voice, lightly squeezing Cole's hand. "How could anyone not? You're truly incredible, Cole."

Cole's eyebrows lift a little and he gives another small shake of his head. "I'm not," he answers evenly, then he smiles, "I didn't think of a silencing charm." He squeezes Calvin's hand in return, steps a little closer, starts to lean in...and then stops. He'd barely paid attention during the assembly a few weeks ago, but he remembers the emphasis that had been placed on consent. Enthusiastic consent. So he asks quietly, "...Can I kiss you? I'd like to. Kiss you."

With each word Calvin's cheeks grow pinker. He's nodding and smiling before Cole can finish his sentence. "Yes, you can... yes, we— I—"

And the he decides talking is too much right now. There's so much to say, but none of it's as good as when he puts his other hand behind Cole's neck and leans in for a kiss. Not their first kiss, technically, but it is the first one where they both can know for certain this is what they want. This is actually what's happening. No audience, no meddlesome bottle, no wondering.

As far as Cole's concerned, the unfinished sentence and the soft fingertips against the back of his neck are enthusiastic enough and he presses his lips to Calvin's. He isn't shy or hesitant and he takes his time, making the kiss last because it feels even better now than it had at the Grotto. Maybe because he knows that Calvin likes him. Maybe because he knows that he likes Calvin. Maybe both. He isn't really thinking about that, though. When he finally draws back, he's a little out of breath and he can feel how quick his heartbeat has gotten.

For a moment, he's still and silent, dark eyes looking into the other boy's gently flushed face. The color in his cheeks is lovely. He's lovely. Then, abruptly, he says, "...I'm really glad you sent me flowers."

Calvin feels as though he's floating. It's Billywigs all over again. He's forgotten where they are, or what's going on outside, or how they even ended up in this situation. Not knowing what to do with himself, he pulls the hand he's holding to his chest. They're standing so close that their clasped hands are pressed between them.

"I nearly didn't," he admits. He'd gone back and forth on it for adays. At one point, he'd nearly begged the organisers to let him take back his note. "But I was tired of dragging my feet, waiting for the timing to be right." Dimi doesn't wait around for the perfect moment; he makes his own opportunities.

Cole is quiet for a moment, considering how different each day of the past week would've been if Calvin hadn't sent the lilies. How different today would've been. Not bad, probably. But not like this at all. He doesn't like the thought much. "I'm...glad you sent the flowers," he repeats a little more softly, some hints of his thought process showing on his face. "If you had to wait because I'm bad at this, because I didn't notice, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to...make all the other times wrong."
