SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING: February

SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING

This February afternoon, the seniors meet in the kitchens for a bonding activity with Prospero, assisted by his companion elf, Ambrosia.

Students are broken up into pairs, and then they're each given a basket of secret ingredients that they must make a meal out of. They have exactly 90 minutes, after which their creations will be judged by Sybilla Borgin, Ulysses Quayle, & Clementine Decourt. The volunteer judges won't know who made what entree. (OOC: Please allow players who do not play a senior to have first dibs on volunteer slots. If there are still open spots by 5 PM Mountain Time, then anyone may volunteer.)

Today, the activity begins with the presentation of the main ingredient, a geoduck. Prospero teaches the seniors how to properly prepare this large clam. Here's hoping you weren't giggling too much at its appearance to learn what to do with it. If you're vegetarian or squeamish, you can trade it out for mangosteens.

Everyone's basket of secret ingredients contains:

Geoduck or mangosteens.
Artichoke hearts.
Spring greens.
Blue corn tortillas.
Blood oranges.

Each creation must use every ingredient in the basket. House-elves will retrieve any other requested ingredients (e.g. flour, eggs, sugar, avocados), but Prospero will be on the lookout for anyone who is rude or makes unreasonable demands. Contestants are allowed the use of magic, assuming they are responsible with it, and are given access to all the equipment in the kitchen. House-elves will help students with equipment they don't understand, or with anything they feel unsafe doing (i.e. knife use).

Please give your character's cooking skills a rating from 1 to 10 and discuss with your partner(s) what your characters are going to make! The results will be calculated with help from RNG, but creativity and volunteer input/reaction may be taken into account.

The winning team gets to pick the menu served to the whole school on Monday for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

This kind of feels like he's meeting Ravi's parents.

Diego knows he needs to impress Sun-mi, but the deck is apparently stacked against him. When the geoduck is pulled out, his face falters. Don't smile, oh my god, Diego. Don't fucking laugh. Don't look at Levi. Diego takes two deep breaths, and calms himself. He's not going to laugh at this ridiculously phallic clam if it kills him.

Quinn has to hide behind Tess because trying not to laugh makes the urge so. much. worse. Burrowed behind her tiny Coppertale pal, her shoulders shake with every hushed ~~snort~~ laugh. She tries to ignore the clam and make herself less disruptive by pulling her hood over her hat buuut resistance is futile as ever.

She'll be fine, she just needs a minute.

Ravi doesn't laugh. It's not even a struggle for him not to laugh, because he's perfected his ability to not laugh at anyone or anything while in Prefect Mode, and god is he focused on staying in Prefect Mode with a teacher watching. Even if that teacher is Ravi's favourite teacher, and Ambrosia keeps giggling at Prospero's side as he teaches them how to clean the geoduck.

Ravi cleans and cuts open this clam with all the seriousness of a medical coroner doing an autopsy.

	Leo's never been more proud of his poker face. Ravi seems very serious about this, so he will be too.. Leo watches the presentation as intently as he would anything. The only sign he's at all amused is the very quiet assessment of "Interesting," at the first presentation, to no one in particular.Because it is. Nature is fascinating. (Reply to this) (Parent)

Diego is... not an incompetent cook! He's spent too much time around Cecil to not know his way around a kitchen. However, he's accustomed to being the assistant who's told what to do by a much (much) more competent chef. Sun-mi, please make all the decisions. Sun-mi, what are we cooking. Sun-mi, he's still really struggling to not find this penis clam funny because he wants you to think Ravi picked a mature young man. :(

Diego's best asset is his skill with a knife. He feels pretty comfortable cutting the geoduck up. His biggest weaknesses are a general lack of understanding about putting together a dish, little confidence in the knowledge he does have, and as always, he's eternally easy to sidetrack. I'll give him a 6.

Tess is in the zone like it's moments before a quidditch game. She seems to have forgotten that half of her classmates (her partner included) are still tickled over the dick clams. She's here to win.

"Okay, clams. What can we make with clams," Tess says, "Clam chowder, fried clams, linguine with clam sauce." That all seems obvious, and doesn't give them room to incorporate the other things, like blood orange. "Clam... pizza?" Probably too weird. She has watched so much Chopped, she knows things go awry when you get too complicated or weird.

Suddenly, Tess has an epiphany face, and looks up at Quinn. "Fish tacos. Clam tacos! Orrr," she looks at the ingredients at hand, "Clam taco salad with blood orange salsa?" It's a question, because Quinn is an important part of the team!

"Fry up everything but the orange and the greens? Make some salsa. Add some cheese? A flavor sensation, dude. What y'think?"

Zav is an excellent judge of what tastes good with what so combining weird ingredients into something edible comes easily to him. He theoretically knows his way around the kitchen but the pressure of competition and having to work with a partner will probably get to him. Nate I hope you know how to use a knife because if you leave the cutting to Xavier there'll be bits of finger in the food. Let's say 6.

Ravi's a 7. He's a competent cook who's been taking Magical Rudiments for years (although whenever he can get away with it, he's on the sewing side of the class rather than the cooking side). He knows his way around the kitchen. With this being his fourth year of Rudiments, he knows a surprising variety of dishes. But while Ravi can follow recipes and directions to the letter, he's not terribly good at creativity. What flavours are at work here? Which of these ingredients would actually go together? Why did Prospero choose such a ridiculous-looking clam?

But that's not the most important question. The most important question is the one he asks Leo now, as he points a wooden spoon to where an Azurcrest and Coppertale are puzzling over their basket. "Do you want to beat Rafael and Cecil?"

Laurel is a 4 or 5. If you were judging based on whether she's having a good time, though, it'd be a solid 10. This is like the best bonding exercise ever! Plus, she totally knows a whole handful of helpful things! The sky is the limit! She read about this one recipe in a book some time! Let's pretend we're on a show!

That said, she's horrible at tasks that require precision, is probably mixing up a bunch of facts and concepts without realizing it, and keeps calling it a goddamn geodick and then laughing.

"Today on Kitchen ... Gazette? ... Ummm ... Let's make, like, tacos? I mean they just HANDED US these tortillas."

Once the actual competition starts, Chris gets down to business because he still wants to win. He may or may not still be stroking the poor king of clams suggestively. "So what'd Honeybee teach you about cooking dick," emphasis stroke for the word dick, "food. It's been like four months."

Chris technically knows how to cook clams. He lives in Boston. He can make a mean clam chowder. Cooking wise, he's at like a seven. But dick joke wise, he's at a strong ten. "Because we can do clam chowder, or tacos, or we can fry everything. We could do the New England clam bake and just substitute the rest of the sea food with this vegetable shit. How do you wanna eat this dick?"

Ras can not cook, if it's sandwiches or something super simple he can handle that but hopefully Irene can do something here. "I don't know what I'm doing with any of this." He starts to eat the bits of food already in front of them, tearing a bit of the tortilla and shoving it into his mouth. "I'm up for anything you can come up with." It isn't that Ras isn't trying just he has no utter idea what to do with any of this. He has people for this and figures he can't phone up his cook and ask what to do here. That would be cheating, wouldn't it?

"At the very least maybe I can try to make it look good." Maybe. That was part of all of this, wasn't it? Ras was just going to eat everything, why couldn't he just be a taster? He gets a three for just being willing to help.

Time for another edition of "Robin knows [x] for the Apocalypse!" He has previously demonstrated his knowledge of such things as altering skirts, folding fitted sheets, and wine pairings (they're not very good wine pairings, but I didn't say anything about skill level). This time it's something that might actually be of some use in the apocalypse: cooking (and also plating, this is going to be so beautifully plated). Turns out Robin is about a strong 7 or weak 8 at cooking.

"Ah man, this dick is gonna fry up so good," he says and it's almost like he has chosen to just straight up ignore the proper name of this majestic creature. "Fry it, toss it on a salad, use them tortillas as fancy ass chips or fake croutons or some shit?" Okay, maybe Robin mostly knows how to fry things, but that's still cooking. "That or a casserole and who the shit even knows where to put a damn orange in there."

Z is... mildly distracted by being placed with Ryan. She's a relatively serious person and usually appreciates the spirit of these bonding exercises, but how lucky did they get today? Seriously? So -- there's just a liiiiiiittle unnecessary touching/flirting going on over here. Nothing crazy! I mean. These are two very clearly mature and levelheaded young adults. >>

ANYWAY. Performance wise, I would peg Z at a 7. She's extremely precise, good at following recipes, and has enough knowledge to get somewhat creative/improvise. She's also got a decent palate, and her mom is into culinary magics and has taught her a couple of things over the years.

"I think I have an idea? Maybe?" she tells Ryan, idly placing a hand on his back as they survey the ingredients. That geoduck is... something else. Truly something else.

"What do you think?"

Rafael has never cooked anything before. He's never had to. A lot of people don't know how to cook, but more than that, Rafael rarely goes into kitchens. He's never been grocery shopping. He's never done his own laundry. He's never taken out the trash.

Staring at the table and all the knives, bowls and ingredients, he feels the slightest twinge of panic. On the bright side, Cecil, he's definitely not going to laugh about the geoduck or male anatomy.

Rafael gets a generous 3. He's not clumsy or unable to take instruction, but he's utterly inexperienced. Cecil's going to have to spend a little time holding his hand ~~so he doesn't lose his temper at an innocent appliance~~.

Ivy's great at following instructions and isn't particularly squeamish, so she's all over clam cleaning. Unfortunately, creativity is not her strong suit, and without a particularly strong culinary background she has noooo idea where to start with creating a dish.

After she's done cleaning the geoduck, she turns to Trixie, still brandishing her knife.

"What should we... like... make?" she asks, considering the less disgusting-looking ingredients before them with a wary expression.

This is why Ty likes monthly bonding activities; ridiculous situations with friends and new experiences and (apparently) dick clams. Nice. The lesson at the beginning of the activity had been difficult to take seriously and harder to focus on, especially with all of the jokes and the animated pantomiming the geoduck had inspired, but he'd caught most of it. Some of it. And hopefully Jesse had caught the rest. He looks over at his prefect partner with a smile, feeling...cautiously optimistic. Last time, he'd been paired with Rafael's boyfriend and it had gone well. Made them closer friends. This time, he'd been paired with Quinn's best friend and...he's sort of hoping for a repeat. Bonding. Or, at least, figuring the guy out a bit more beyond the little bit he already knows. Smart as hell party boy isn't a bad start, but it isn't exactly complete either.

A student in Magical Rudiments since his junior year, Ty has a basic knowledge of cooking and he's inclined to do what he knows rather than going out on a limb and making something heinous. But he could be convinced. Skill-wise, he's probably a 6. He pipes up, "You know, Jesse, we could probably use the...body part, then not-siphon part, to make geoduck strips. Just cut it up and pan fry it and use the food processor to turn the tortilla into breadcrumbs for breading, right? Use the rest in a side salad or something? Doesn't get much simpler than that." Then, with a laugh, he adds, "If we can manage to cut up the dick the right way."
