JUNIOR/SOPHOMORE MONTHLY BONDING ACTIVITY

JUNIOR/SOPHOMORE
MONTHLY BONDING ACTIVITY

Mrs. O'Hare and Mr. Thorn walk the large group of Sophomores and Juniors out to the lake. It's cold, but the lake is too large to freeze entirely. There's a lot of extra gear, including life jackets, magical gloves to keep hands warm, hats and waterproof coats, because it's time for a lesson on winter kayaking!

After a long lecture about safety, the students are told they'll be allowed to have some simple races to the island and back. You may race three times: once with your assigned partner(s), and two more times with different teams. There are some three person kayaks available.

The two teams with the best times get a beautiful flyfishing lure made from peacock feathers, one for each participant. There's a safety pin on the back that allows it to be worn as a brooch, but the pin can be easily vanished with the tap of a wand to make it into a functional lure. It's nearly invulnerable, and twitches slightly like it's a living insect. There must be some fascination charm on it, because it's difficult to take your eyes off of it. Mrs. O'Hare informs the student that Headmistress Bloom made them all by hand.

Before and after, there's a generous amount of hot chocolate available, and a bonfire has been set up on the beach for students chatting and taking breaks.

THE RULES
  • Follow all safety procedures! You must be properly dressed and equipped to be allowed onto the lake.
  • No sabotaging your opponents! It's just not safe, kids.
  • You can engage in some friendly competitive banter, but respect your opponents!
  • Take lots of breaks and stay warm!
  • You can enter three times. The first time must be with your assigned partner, the second and third times may be with anyone.
  • Your time will be calculated via RNG. There is a chance of your character's kayak tipping over with a particularly low score.

The pairings are as follows:

Sybilla & Reid
Veronica & Olivia
Cameron & Reece
Casper & Sylvester
Jonathan & Micah
Avery & Lachlan
Ursula & Victoria
Rosemary & Susana
Ferdinand & Hazel
Matteo & Ariadne
Ennis & Milo
Kurt & Hayley
Sofia & Isabelle
Estella & Chloe
Mackenzie & Ulysses
Jaime & Adeline Roxanne & Solomon Saira & Joanna
Coralee & Calvin Casey & Gabriela Dominic & Katerina
Cole & Jefferson Jacob & William Sebastien & Riley
Regan & Marilyn Frances & Clementine

» Preparation: Get on your gear and greet your partners! All students need a lifejacket, appropriate coat, gloves and pants. If you don't have them, the school will provide. Unfortunately, what the school has on hand is bulky and extremely unflattering. Mr. Thorn is quick to remind everyone that safety is sexy, and no one's getting in a boat without being properly dressed!

» Racing: Post here with your entries into the race, and feel free to play out a little kayaking scene on the water with your partner(s).

» Around the Bonfire: Warm up, take a break and socialize. There's hot chocolate and s'mores, and as the day comes to a close and the activity ends, you're welcome to stay until curfew and have fun.

» OOC - Questions, comments, concerns!

Please fill out the following form and post it to RACING in order to participate and qualify for the prize.

Teo and Ennis

Characters: Teo and Ennis
Attempt Number: Second
Experience: It's the same as the first. He's still in boating and has the general gist of how to work a kayak
Performance: Significantly worse than the first, because okay - they're out here in this kayak, and it's a cold day, but it's also a beautiful day, and he's just chilling out here with his best friend Ennis, so it's the perfect time to discuss how beautiful the day is, and how Ennis's spirits seem to be high and what does Ennis think about the recent weird shit going on at school? Does he have any theories he wants to discuss because it's not like there's anything pressing to concentrate on right now - like a race or anything. Teo truly believes that what's going on right now isn't weird or threatening - it just is. The universe is in constant fluctuation, and things materialize in ways you didn't expect them to - but that's not always a bad thing. It's merely intriguing, and he feels blessed to be right here in the center of it all. WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE
Number Score: if there were negatives on this scale, it'd be a negative three. But since there's not, it's a 1.

Characters: Teo and Ennis
Attempt Number: Second
Experience: He was in a kayak ten minutes ago and it was Not Great.
Performance: Significantly better than the first, because okay - they're out here in this kayak, and it's a cold day, but it's also a beautiful day, and he's just chilling out here with his best friend Teo, so it's the perfect time to discuss how beautiful the day is, and Teo's hair has some extra fluff to it today and it looks lovely, and Ennis wants to run his fingers through it and so he does. It's as soft as it looks. How wonderful. Teo is so wonderful.

Number Score: 19.5 for how much Ennis loves and adores Teo. 10 for Ennis's ability to sit still and leisurely paddle around the lake while neglecting the point of the exercise (OR IS HE?? IS THIS NOT TRULY BONDING???) -3 in terms of effort he's exerting to win the race. This comes out to an average of 8.833

Teo (16+1) and Ennis (4+8.833) rolled a total of 29.833 (out of a needed 35)... and did not make the whole trip.

Goosey bumps their boat, scaring them, and they fall into the water!

Ennis sits behind Teo in the kayak, perfectly placed to reach out and run his fingers through Teo's hair as if that's not a weird gesture at all. Even though he's 3 inches from freezing cold water, he is feeling very relaxed right now.

"Do you ever think it's kind of rude how everyone welcomes themselves into Anon's home, but they refuse to let Anon into ours? But Anon still wants to be everyone's friend, even if some people are cruel to them."

It's not a weird gesture at all, it's a beautiful gesture. Teo is a very big fan of physical affection. He believes physical affection is the gears of the world; that's what keeps everybody's individual worlds spinning to make up a beautiful, collective whole.

"Yes," he hums. He's feeling very relaxed too, but he doesn't really fear the water. The water is what the water is. It can do him no harm unless he harms it.

"I believe Anon's reaching out in the best way they know how," he says. "It may be ways we do not yet understand, but people fear what they don't understand. They just need to relax, and open themselves up to the possibilities of alternative ways of communication. Anon opens their home to us, and keeps us protected every time we go there, unannounced. I imagine Anon coming all the way to us wasn't easy. But they tried. I feel like we should bring a gift the next time we go to the grotto. A house warming gift, to express our appreciation."

"That's what I've been saying," Ennis gushes in response to Anon's reaching out, as if he and Teo have a Psychic and Spiritual Connection and aren't just parroting the same things they've already said multiple times back at each other. "I empathize with Anon a lot? I'm not very good at communicating like everyone else either and I know some people find it off-putting, but we're really trying our best? Anon just wants to be friends and they're being shunned because they're different." Ennis wants to lean forward to bonk his head against Teo's back, but he doesn't want to risk tipping the boat so he settles for placing his hands on his shoulders instead. Kayaks really aren't that great for one-on-ones like boats are.

"I feel like we should too. Chloe's left gifts, and Cole and I left gifts last time we were there together. Art that we made. Do you think they would like it if we made food for them? That way they wouldn't have to keep up with more trinkets?"
