JUNIOR/SOPHOMORE MONTHLY BONDING ACTIVITY

JUNIOR/SOPHOMORE
MONTHLY BONDING ACTIVITY

Mrs. O'Hare and Mr. Thorn walk the large group of Sophomores and Juniors out to the lake. It's cold, but the lake is too large to freeze entirely. There's a lot of extra gear, including life jackets, magical gloves to keep hands warm, hats and waterproof coats, because it's time for a lesson on winter kayaking!

After a long lecture about safety, the students are told they'll be allowed to have some simple races to the island and back. You may race three times: once with your assigned partner(s), and two more times with different teams. There are some three person kayaks available.

The two teams with the best times get a beautiful flyfishing lure made from peacock feathers, one for each participant. There's a safety pin on the back that allows it to be worn as a brooch, but the pin can be easily vanished with the tap of a wand to make it into a functional lure. It's nearly invulnerable, and twitches slightly like it's a living insect. There must be some fascination charm on it, because it's difficult to take your eyes off of it. Mrs. O'Hare informs the student that Headmistress Bloom made them all by hand.

Before and after, there's a generous amount of hot chocolate available, and a bonfire has been set up on the beach for students chatting and taking breaks.

THE RULES
  • Follow all safety procedures! You must be properly dressed and equipped to be allowed onto the lake.
  • No sabotaging your opponents! It's just not safe, kids.
  • You can engage in some friendly competitive banter, but respect your opponents!
  • Take lots of breaks and stay warm!
  • You can enter three times. The first time must be with your assigned partner, the second and third times may be with anyone.
  • Your time will be calculated via RNG. There is a chance of your character's kayak tipping over with a particularly low score.

The pairings are as follows:

Sybilla & Reid
Veronica & Olivia
Cameron & Reece
Casper & Sylvester
Jonathan & Micah
Avery & Lachlan
Ursula & Victoria
Rosemary & Susana
Ferdinand & Hazel
Matteo & Ariadne
Ennis & Milo
Kurt & Hayley
Sofia & Isabelle
Estella & Chloe
Mackenzie & Ulysses
Jaime & Adeline Roxanne & Solomon Saira & Joanna
Coralee & Calvin Casey & Gabriela Dominic & Katerina
Cole & Jefferson Jacob & William Sebastien & Riley
Regan & Marilyn Frances & Clementine

» Preparation: Get on your gear and greet your partners! All students need a lifejacket, appropriate coat, gloves and pants. If you don't have them, the school will provide. Unfortunately, what the school has on hand is bulky and extremely unflattering. Mr. Thorn is quick to remind everyone that safety is sexy, and no one's getting in a boat without being properly dressed!

» Racing: Post here with your entries into the race, and feel free to play out a little kayaking scene on the water with your partner(s).

» Around the Bonfire: Warm up, take a break and socialize. There's hot chocolate and s'mores, and as the day comes to a close and the activity ends, you're welcome to stay until curfew and have fun.

» OOC - Questions, comments, concerns!

Please fill out the following form and post it to RACING in order to participate and qualify for the prize.
Characters: Who are the two/three characters in your boat?
Attempt Number: Is this their first, second or third race?
Experience: Do they have any experience kayaking/boating?
Performance: How did they do this time?
Number Score: Give them an overall score between 1–10.

BEST TIMES
  1. Uly & Kenzie (6:20)

  2. Solo & Roxie (7:02)

  3. Sy & Casper (7:19)

Calvin's eyes widen at that last word, like Coralee slapped him. He remembers how Cole had been shaken over someone on the anon post calling him that, and Calvin tries to keep in mind that this is a successfully executed plan as he swallows his pride. This is going well, he thinks, even as his heart is beating uncomfortably fast. A part of him wants to run. Another, larger part of him wants to fight. He can't do either, though. It's important that he stays where he is. It's important he doesn't return fire.

"It was an accident," Calvin repeats, a little more assertively. "I was trying, it was just difficult. I asked you to help me," he adds, once again falling right between pointing blame and pleading.

Having exited the kayak with Wilde and possessing little desire to get back out there, Micah gets a front row seat to Calvin and Coralee coming out of the lake. He'd picked up his camcorder and was watching this showdown through a lens when Coralee snarls and advances on Calvin.

Micah's eyes narrow at the look on Calvin's face. Micah's not a fighter, but he doesn't like anyone attacking his friends. Especially not Calvin, who... never mind what Calvin is. Micah doesn't need to be told to stand down. He knows this is CAMPS. This is for Cole, whose kind heart deserves better than to jerked around by Coralee.

Micah keeps his camera trained on the action.

Ree, however, is less sanguine. She knew something like this was going to happen eventually. She was waiting for it.

Still, watching someone scream at Calvin is really fucking difficult.

She comes up beside Micah, expression stormy, and grabs for his elbow to keep herself from flying to Calvin's defense.

Cole, who has been sitting by the fire and drawing ever since he got back from the kayaking (mis)adventure, turns to glance over his shoulder at the sound of this conversation. Argument? Fight? When he sees Coralee and Calvin, he frowns instantly. Both are sopping wet. Coralee's pretty face is twisted with anger and her words are sharp enough to cut even though they aren't directed at him. Calvin is shrinking back from her but not actually retreating and the expression on his friend's face is one he's never seen before. One he doesn't like at all. Rendered momentarily still by uncertainty and shock and confusion, he just stares.

Micah's gotten really good at not losing the shot even when someone jostles him, but when he realizes it's Ree who has his arm, there's a definite oh shit camera wobble. He doesn't know if Calvin's told her details of their plan. Micah assumes he must have—it's the only explanation for why Ree hasn't already stormed in there and punched Coralee—but Micah also knows Ree well enough to know how much this goes against her every fiercely protective instinct.

"Don't," Micah whispers. Dropping his camera for a minute (it's on a strap, thankfully), he repositions them so his arm is secure around Ree's waist, ready to pull her back if necessary. "He needs to do this."

"I know that," Ree says through gritted teeth. She gets it. She does. That doesn't make it better. No one is supposed to fuck with the people she loves with impunity.

Hazel is hovering back a ways to watch the unfolding scene, scanning the rest of CAMPS as she does so. This is significantly harder to watch than she ever would have anticipated. She can appreciate Ree's clear desire to step in, because Calvin just seems so... meek. Even though she knows a lot of it is an act, it's making her toes curl in discomfort. She knows this is for the best, though.

Solomon comes to stop beside Hazel. Solomon is by far not a fighter because apparently no sophomore is but watching a fight unfold right in front of him is a lot harder to watch than he expects. "Someone should do something," he mutters to Hazel, or any of the other sophomores staring. "What if this escalates? What if she hits him?" Which was ridiculous because this was a bonding activity and there were adults and of course it wouldn't escalate like it had between him and Casper, but he was having trouble rationalizing that in this exact moment. Calvin was a little prickly and a little hard to get to know but that didn't mean he deserved to be shouted at and called mean names - in front of everyone.

Sylla may or may not be silently hoping Calvin casts one of the curses she has suggested to him, or waiting for a fight, but sits primly and blinks intently as if nothing out of the ordinary is going on.

However, internally:

Coralee doesn't realise her mistake, and interprets Calvin's widened eyes as fear, which sends a spike of satisfaction through her. She's itching to slap him like she would an incompetent house-elf, but even she's not stupid enough to do that in front of an audience, so she curls her fingers into fists at her sides.

"You owe me a new pair of boots," she snaps, shoving past Calvin, because if she doesn't get out of these wet clothes immediately she's going to die of hypothermia.

She is so done with this bonding activity.
