JUNIOR/SOPHOMORE
MONTHLY BONDING ACTIVITY

Mrs. O'Hare and Mr. Thorn walk the large group of Sophomores and Juniors out to the lake. It's cold, but the lake is too large to freeze entirely. There's a lot of extra gear, including life jackets, magical gloves to keep hands warm, hats and waterproof coats, because it's time for a lesson on winter kayaking!

After a long lecture about safety, the students are told they'll be allowed to have some simple races to the island and back. You may race three times: once with your assigned partner(s), and two more times with different teams. There are some three person kayaks available.

The two teams with the best times get a beautiful flyfishing lure made from peacock feathers, one for each participant. There's a safety pin on the back that allows it to be worn as a brooch, but the pin can be easily vanished with the tap of a wand to make it into a functional lure. It's nearly invulnerable, and twitches slightly like it's a living insect. There must be some fascination charm on it, because it's difficult to take your eyes off of it. Mrs. O'Hare informs the student that Headmistress Bloom made them all by hand.

Before and after, there's a generous amount of hot chocolate available, and a bonfire has been set up on the beach for students chatting and taking breaks.

THE RULES

Follow all safety procedures! You must be properly dressed and equipped to be allowed onto the lake.
No sabotaging your opponents! It's just not safe, kids.
You can engage in some friendly competitive banter, but respect your opponents!
Take lots of breaks and stay warm!
You can enter three times. The first time must be with your assigned partner, the second and third times may be with anyone.
Your time will be calculated via RNG. There is a chance of your character's kayak tipping over with a particularly low score.

» Preparation: Get on your gear and greet your partners! All students need a lifejacket, appropriate coat, gloves and pants. If you don't have them, the school will provide. Unfortunately, what the school has on hand is bulky and extremely unflattering. Mr. Thorn is quick to remind everyone that safety is sexy, and no one's getting in a boat without being properly dressed!

» Racing: Post here with your entries into the race, and feel free to play out a little kayaking scene on the water with your partner(s).

» Around the Bonfire: Warm up, take a break and socialize. There's hot chocolate and s'mores, and as the day comes to a close and the activity ends, you're welcome to stay until curfew and have fun.

Reid doesn't have any real experience boating, and certainly doesn't have any gear, so he ends up with a pile of the unflattering school loaners. Any hint of a svelte, quick athlete is now hidden under an oddly potato-shaped waterproof coat. Reid fusses a little over how weighed down he feels, but in the end complaining is too much trouble.

When they're shown the lures, though, he looks over at Sylla. Time to figure out if he's going to put out effort or not. "Do you want one?"

"Last minute change up!" O'Hare announces after a quick conversation with Philippa Nightingale. She calls over Casey Patterson, Gabriela Flores, Jaime Castillo and Addy Foster-Hayes.

"Nightingale, you're with me. Now, Patterson, why don't you go on over with Flores, and we'll get this show on the road. Castillo and Foster-Hayes, you're still together. Go ahead and suit on up."

O'Hare, having been informed Pippa has a severe phobia of water, hands her a stopwatch so she can help time the races. The new matches will be Casey Patterson & Gabriela Flores, and Jaime Castillo & Addy Foster-Hayes.

Casper, who has been in the Boating Club going on three years, is confident about his ability to handle this race...but he's less certain about his partner. Not because Sy isn't athletic or relatively experienced with this sort of thing too, he is, but because he doesn't know where he stands with his former friend. He still gets pissed off when he thinks about everything that the Coppertale put Katya through, but she's forgiven Sy and that's forced some of the heat out of his anger. And the guy hasn't been terrible to him lately either. He'd even been sort of kind when he'd needed people to be sort of kind. But that doesn't mean they're friends again.

Not knowing what else to do, he crosses his arms and smirks at Sy and says dryly, "Too bad you're so out of practice. We used to be pretty good at this."

Cole likes Jeffy and he doesn't particularly mind the indignity of unflattering, bulky, ugly kayaking gear. But when he sees how far the teachers are expecting them to take the little boats, his face falls and he looks at his partner with obvious dismay. "They want us to go...all the way out there?" He's never done this before and it looks hard. Like a lot of work. But...those lures are very pretty and strangely fascinating. What a conundrum.

Ferdie doesn't mind the idea of this double decker bonding activity too much. They always talk to each other,as juniors, it's probably a good thing that they branch out from time to time. And he's done this before; he's in boating club after all. Still, the idea of being paired with a member of the most ultra competitive house seems vaguely daunting today. But Hazel is nice enough, as far as he knows. It'll be okay.

He actually has his own life jacket, his mom sent him a customized one, something about how she really didn't trust the school to watch against kids tampering with the safety equipment. But Ferdie is pulling on an ugly school life jacket as he smiles at Hazel. (The other one has never seen the light outside of its own box.) "I promise I know how to row a boat."

This is about as much as he can actually promise.

Who the fuck is 'Gabriella Flores?'

Has Casey ever kayaked before? No. Does this seem to matter to him? NOT IN THE SLIGHTEST! What does matter to Casey is the unwieldy outfit they have to wear. "I feel like a fuckin' sumo wrestler," he remarks as he tries to twist around in his gear. The only response he gets is the wyzzz of vinyl meeting vinyl. "I look like a fuckin' sumo wrestler." He tries to extend his arms and legs in a little dance move, but it's awkward. "This is shit." And he's already freezing.

He shrugs off the discontent because HEY! he can distract himself by winning! and points the end of his oar at Gabi, holding it like a spear. "You want the feather thing? Or d'you wanna try 'n flip somebody's boat?" The childish grin that spreads across his face at the end probably tells which he wants to do.

Like Reid, Ennis is also in unflattering borrowed clothes. But unlike Reid, Ennis has no svelte figure that's regrettably being covered. He's a steak fry turned back into its potato form.

With Thorn's assurance to the students that "safety is sexy", Ennis blushes and grins sheepishly before giving a happy little wiggle to show off his Sexy Safety Gear. It gives temporary relief from the anxiety caused by competitive sports.

Kurt looks sideways at the copper-haired girl as he zips up his 'sexy' (... is it???) coat. "I-I've, um, done some in O.E." He sounds unsure of this fact even though it's true, but welcome to Kurt in new situations. ... Wait a minute, this is supposed to be New Kurt in New Situations!!!

He can so totally do this! And besides, he knows Ferris from Outdoor Exploration and Equestrian, so it's not as though she's a total stranger! He even knows her well enough to never, ever say 'Hayley!' Confidence temporarily boosted, he continues with a small smile. "W-we've both done it in O.E., so we might even have a chance if you want to race."

Saira is not pleased. She's wasting precious study time for this? To mess around in the cold on a lake for a trinket? No. Do you know how difficult it is to keep a headscarf secured in the wind on a lake? When you're trying to go fast? Yes, yes, she can use magic for that, but it's the principle of the thing.

This is not her favorite bonding experience ever.

"We are not going to win," she informs Joanna by way of greeting. "I hope you do not find this too heartbreaking."

Well, if they're teaming up with sophomores, at least it's a sophomore that wants to win. Doesn't matter that Rosy's not in OE or Boating Club, if winning is an option then she's gonna try okay. Grabbing a sexy loaner lifejacket and a paddle, Rosy tosses the extra in Ana's direction.

"I'll try not to yell at you out there," she says, only half-joking. "But if I start the only way to get me to stop is to go faster."

Katya happily gets bundled up and gets super excited about this whole bonding activity. It's one that she feels like she might actually do well in and she can talk the entire time. Though she isn't the most competitive of people, Katya figures she will do her best to make sure Dom at least has a chance. Her own blue sparkly lifejacket with a small 'K' on the buckles in hand, she finds her way over to Dom.

"I think we can do this. I know how to make boats stay a boat and can totally make them move." She is going to do her best at least. Tugging on her gloves, she gives a huge smile. "It's a bit cold but hey, if we fall in the water we at least can get a shit ton of hot chocolate after."

Experience: Calvin certainly doesn't have any!
Performance: Calvin is aggressively aiming for bad. Today, it's like he can't follow a single, simple instruction, and he's doing a lot of meek apologising. He has to ask the teachers and Coralee a lot of questions, all in a hopeful attempt to get Coralee nice and irritated with him. Above all else, though, he's tipping over this kayak "accidentally" halfway through the race.
Number Score: He's getting a 1 or a 2, even though he could probably pull off a 4 if he weren't trying to get Coralee to want to murder him.

Attempt Number: First
Experience: He has experience being in a boat and fishing, and he's been in a kayak a few times before. But racing in a kayak? HAHA, NOPE.
Performance: Ennis is one of the least athletic kids at camping school. He has passable arm strength from farm work, but he has no stamina and he tires out quickly. The few times he's been in a kayak involved leisurely paddling close to shore in warm and sunny weather, not racing out to the island IN FREEZING COLD WEATHER. He's worried about tipping the boat, but he's also curious about Goosey and keeps peering over the edge of the kayak and into the dark water to see if he can spot her.
Number Score: A generous 3.

It'd be a 2, but he's worried about Milo's implants being submerged in water if they fall out of the kayak. They're probably waterproof, but Ennis isn't really sure how they work. He's trying to be careful, but he's still garbage at this.

Performance: Wilde likes winning and looking good in front of people, so he'll give this an honest effort - but if it starts going badly he'll devolve into a sarcastic mess. Seriously, kayaking? Who even cares about that lure? Alsooooo Micah probably wouldn't have a difficult time distracting him with Micah ness. :s

Experience: He's in both OEs (OE∞) and he canoes. Which isn't kayaking, but it's something?
Performance: Kurt loves Being Outdoors and Doing Outdoorsy Things, so he's a pleasant paddling partner! He isn't very competitive and will try to match Ferris' level as much as he can — if she's GOING FOR BROKE then he's like "Okay, I can try! *passable effort!*" but if she's like "Fuck this I don't care" then he's like "Okay we're just Ferris and New Kurt out for a little kayak nbd 🙃".

Experience: Nope.
Performance: Reid is trying! Since Sylla said she wanted the lures, Reid is going to make an admirable effort to not be lazy and make that happen. He's athletic and graceful, but he's better at being fast than strong, and might run out of stamina more quickly than some of his fellow Quidditch players.

Experience: Sy used to be in Boating Club until mid-October. If competitive kayaking has ever been a thing in Boating Club, Sy was definitely involved.
Performance: Sy's putting all of his effort and focus into it. He cares more winning than the prize ~~although he'll still take the prize to lord it over Rosy if she doesn't win anything~~. At far as the athletic aspect goes, Sy has good technique, strength and stamina, although it does take a minute to get the hang of things again. He's gone boating with Casper before, so assuming they don't spontaneously attack each other on the boat, their teamwork might be pretty good?
Number Score: 7. It would be higher if he wasn't out of practice. :(
