UNSANCTIONED CAMPING

This is almost certainly a bad idea, but when faced with the arrival of family members the next day, who doesn't need to relieve a little stress? After curfew, some students slip out to the wooded area between Azurcrest and the sorting cave. There's a scattering of tents, and in the middle a campfire blazes.

The mood isn't as wild as a Grotto party, and most of the entertainment is found in sitting, talking, and drinking. Alcohol is available in reasonable amounts, enough for everyone to have a drink or two (or three if you really need it).

» Around the fire: The forest doesn't have the same warming effect as the Grotto, but it feels very... normal? Just woods and trees and the hoot of an owl. Are you relieved, or do you feel lonely?

» BERTIE BOTT'S EVERY FLAVOUR BEANS: Someone got their hands on a family sized bag of these imported sweets. At first, it's just taken to be candy, but as the truth about these jelly beans is fully understood, it becomes a spectacle.

There's a group of students sitting in a circle, passing the bag around. The idea is that you take one, and then everyone waits in anticipation for your reaction. (Let's be real, they're all hoping you get earwax or cigarette ash.) You must then guess what it is before passing the bag to the left.

In game terms, this means reply to the root comment, and we will use RNG to pick out a flavor for you. You can then write your character's reaction and attempt to identify what they just put in their mouth.

Official results for your random flavor could come from Diego (morale), Sy (stokers), or the mod journal (goosemods).

» The Tents: The magically warmed tents make another appearance. They're filled with pillows and blankets and should be pleasant to sleep in.

» The Morning: In the early hours of the morning, students (hopefully) begin to sneak back to their campgrounds, and (maybe) avoid the eyes of vigilant prefects.

» Did you get in trouble?: If you did, reply here. The punishment will be two nights of detention starting Monday, and a loss of 10 house points per student. Visiting parents will also find out about the indiscretion.

Chris actually wakes up earlier than usual - entirely hung over and maybe just a little bit still drunk. But he's totally willing to walk anybody that needs it back to their cabin. While also giving them serious advice as to how to deal with their prefect should their prefect happen to be awake.

Any Ribbonfin junior girls' advice starts with 'Rosy's gonna be awake. Do not look her in the eye. Do not argue. Come to breakfast as early as possible. And try to remember that you are her fishes and she worries about you and has a terrible way of expressing her motherly concern.'

Rosy is awake. Of course Rosy is awake, she never even got to sleep. She's been sitting in an armchair by the fireplace all night, wrapped in a blanket, her stomach twisting, trying not to throw up outside in the snow or punch something and wake up the roommates who didn't try to sneak out. If her eyes are red it's because she's tired and not because she possibly cried at all. If her hair looks like shit it's not because she was anxiously yanking at it. If her teeth are gone it's definitely not because she was grinding them, it was probably because of, I don't know, let's say meth.

Whatever it is, it's not because she spent the entire night thinking about her stupid fight with Sy. It's not because the day she's been dreading for two weeks is here.

It's because she's tired and that's it.

When the door opens, she looks up to see who it is. But instead of yelling or lecturing, Rosy just raises an eyebrow and points at Chloe's bed. If she opens her mouth right now, who knows what might come out. She could throw up. Or she could say something meaner than the situation really calls for. Something she regrets saying and spends the whole night thinking about.

Something like that.

That's probably a better response than Chris expects. After the fight with Sy - which he only vaguely remembers but remembers enough to actually feel bad about - his warnings to basically any ribbonfin got super serious on the trek back.

But since this is Rosy's cabin, he lingers because Rosy looks like shit. And today is the day and he knows It bothers Rosy. "Hey," he says quietly, after she silently basically tells Chloe to go to bed. "You want a hug?"

Hugs are not really Rosy’s thing. They never have been. There’s too much baggage associated with physical affection. Is it a challenge? A reward? A ploy to get closer to her and make her let her guard down? But she moves toward Chris and the door anyways. Not for a hug. Just to be quieter, so she doesn’t wake up her other roommates. Or something like that.

“I’m fine,” she says in a voice that does not have her usual bite to it. She meant for it to have a bite to it. Now it just sounds like she’s actually fine.

“Did, uh—” She wants to ask about Sy. Did he stick around after she left? Did he do something stupid? Is he in trouble? Is he okay? Rosy clears her throat. “I take it no one busted up the party,” she says instead. “But it won’t matter if Rafael catches you coming in right now.”

Chris shakes his head. "I'm not worried about me," Chris says. Usually he puts a lot more thought into sneaking back in. He'd put thought into it this morning too but hes pretty sure there's red rings around Rosy's eyes so sneaking back in can wait. "Sy was gone by the time I woke up. He didn't do anything lethal after you left," he says, to answer her unasked question. "Nobody busted our party so...." so he's got a good chance of not getting caught. Unless he got lost in the woods or passed out along the way or got ate by a wayward bear. Chris says none of these out loud.

Rosy looks down, nodding a little when he mentions Sy. It doesn't completely dispel the anxiety gnawing at her gut, but it helps. Maybe Reid managed to get him back in time. Maybe he didn't punch a hole in the wall of his cabin. Maybe he didn't just decide to leave, to make the three-hour hike out of the Anti-Apparation Zone and then go anywhere that wasn't here.

But maybe he did and Chris just doesn't know. How could he know?

"I should've just left it." She shakes her head, and reaches out to grab Chris' hand. It felt mildly hypocritical to be mad at Chloe for sneaking out and then say nothing to her boyfriend who did the exact same thing, but Chris wasn't her responsibility. He couldn't be. Rosy needed someone that didn't need or want her to take care of them. Then again, as Rosy had been thinking all night, maybe no one actually needed or wanted that from her. "I started that fight, we both would have been happier if I just stayed here."

Chris takes her hand and squeezes it gently because he suspects this is a ploy to get closer and he's okay with it because Rosy needs to get close to someone. And then he hugs her because it's definitely a ploy to get closer. Chris isn't really a hugger but his mom explained what hugging does for your body when he was like ten. It releases like some kind of fucking chemical and makes you feel better or some shit. Maybe Rosy needs it.

Sy was a dick and Chris was a dick last night for not following her back to ribbonfin. Sy wasn't even wrong. Rosy probably is driving everyone around her crazy these last two weeks but it's not like she's doing it on purpose. It's not like she's enjoying it. "He didn't mean it. You clean when you're stressed. He starts fights. But he's trying. He's been bailing on quidditch. I don't know what the fuck he's been doing but its gotta be serious for him to bail on quidditch. He just doesn't how to prove it. So he fights. Because he's a dumbass."
