SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING: January

SENIOR BONDING

January’s senior monthly bonding is being hosted by a very (very, very) reluctant Mr. Chettri. He’s smiling, but there’s something behind his eyes that suggests that this is his nightmare.

He’s reserved the atrium, which has been filled with small tables and chairs. Students are assigned a partner, and are asked to sit at a table together. There are pastries, coffee and tea available if you want them. (Vegan options are offered.) You’re also provided with a piece of paper. The goal of the game is to sit and talk quietly so he doesn’t have to, and try to find as many things as possible that you and the other person have in common.

THE RULES
  • Your characters have an hour and a half.
  • They must write down every item that the two of them have in common.
  • These things must be discovered by playing out the scene to qualify for a win.
    • Clarification: This means that you must roleplay the discussion and discovery of items in order to have them be counted. Simply listing them without your characters talking out their similarities will not count. This event is meant to reward a pair who plays out a scene with a lot of dialogue.
  • If you come up with something that breaks the game, Mr. Chettri will be amused but he’ll discount your inflated numbers. (For instance, saying you have 206 bones in common.) This is about getting to know one another, not trying to outsmart your teacher.
    • Clarification: Any time a category of very similar things (friends in common, classes in common, hookups in common) exceeds 4, Chettri is going to count them as one single item when we calculate the winners.
  • You have until 11:59 PM, Sunday Jan 8, after which we’ll count up how many things each pair came up with.
  • The winners will receive a pair of old little drawstring pouches, which are revealed to be bottomless. They can fit any number of (nonliving) items inside of them, assuming what you put inside can fit through the 5” opening.
  • Edit: There will be a hidden RNG element during final selection.

The senior pairings are as follows:

Magdalen & Jeremiah
Irene & Anuhea
Cressida & Ivy
Nathaniel & Wesley
Leonardo & Ty
Tabitha & Jesse
Zoey & Isaiah Levi & Beatrix Theresa & Dahlia
Rafael & Wilhelmina Ravinder & Cecil Asher & Robin
Quinn & Penelope Henrietta & Christopher Laurel & Ryan
Diego & Marilyn*

* As the assignments are handed out, Mr. Chettri realizes the numbers have come up odd. Someone must be out sick. This doesn’t immediately worry him, as he figures he can sit with the spare student and do the activity with them. Mr. Chettri is imagining one of the shy, introverted students, or perhaps one of his Divination prodigies. That would be nice. But when he looks up from his papers to see who’s standing alone, he immediately recognizes Cecil’s extremely chatty best friend with the glasses, Diego Morales. Oh no. This is not happening. In desperation, Mr. Chettri grabs Marilyn, and before they know it they’ve joined Senior Bonding!

Ravi & Cecil & A Cute Stalker

Cecil is unable to deny that he is, in fact, a teacher's pet with a high GPA that actually enjoys the monthly bonding activities, and just laughs good-naturedly. He's about to suggest something else when Ravi asks about his scar. He touches it reflexively, knowing its angle and position without thinking about it. "Oh. Um. Quite a bit longer than that, actually. One of my sisters climbed up into a tree, went too high, and was scared to come down again. I went up after her and helped her get back off the branch she was on, but then slipped, dangled for...a while, and fell before they could get back with dad. It knocked the wind out of me pretty good and I broke my arm and I cut myself somewhere along the way too." He shrugs. This is all fairly easy to talk about now, but the experience likely had an impact on the very acrophobic Cecil. "I think I was ten or so."

He sips his tea, then smiles brightly at the mention of Diego and their other mutual friends. He supposes it's inevitable, given that they've all grown up together, but it's still a nice thought. "Maybe a bit," he agrees warmly, "But I'm tempted. I did notice that you and Diego seem to be spending more time together this year; I'm glad. He said you went out to Moab too. Did you get to see the snow out there? It's sort of surreal, but the picture he sent me was beautiful." There's that lack of competitive spirit! If Ravi lets him, Cecil may just set the competition aside entirely for a pleasant conversation with his friend instead.

Ravi bursts out laughing, and holds up a hand in apology. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to make light of the incident. It's just..." He writes the next point, then turns the paper to show Cecil: 15. Got hurt as a child trying to rescue someone from a tree. "I have this little scar on my shoulder, which I thought could be a similarity, but this makes for a better story. Well... no, yours is much more heroic. I can imagine how your sisters idolized you after that. Me, on the other hand... my neighbour's cat went up a tree, and I got it into my head that I could save the cat and impress her. What actually happened is that I fell and broke my tooth—" He taps his front tooth with its noticeable chip. "—and the cat rescued itself. Alas. I was eight, she was nine. The neighbour, that is, not the cat."

He shakes his head, and is still laughing when Cecil comments on Diego, which is fortunate because it saves Ravi from showing his embarrassment. Not that Ravi is about to blush over Diego or anything. "Ah... yes. I saw the snow. Diego actually took me to this interesting restaurant, high up on the rocks, with this spectacular view of the area..." He trails off. "It was... lovely."

While the subject isn't a sensitive one, Cecil is surprised by Ravi's immediate laughter. He blinks, watching silently as the other boy begins to write, then leans to read the new addition to the list. Then he understands. He laughs too, shaking his head and pointing out, "You tried? We both tried? I'm sure the cat appreciated your valiant effort just as much as Daph appreciated mine. Anyway, at least you can still climb trees; I'll have to call you the next time a cat or a sister or a freshman or anyone needs rescuing." He blushes faintly and sips at his tea again.

Failing to notice Ravi's embarrassment over discussing Diego, Cecil just smiles brightly, "That sounds amazing."
