A letter is delivered to Cecil by an affectionate owl that he might recognize as belonging to Diego's mom. It arrives before the party at Tabitha's.

Cecil,
How's your break going? Keeping warm? I hope you're having a good time. Say hi to all the Honeychurches for me. I realize I could just send you a message over the journals, so I justified writing a real letter by shoving local plant life into the envelope. Perfect excuse, I know.

I was given a piano and a clarinet, so I've been keeping busy getting the hang of those. Which is good, because I'm technically grounded. Luckily Ofelia doesn't really know what my journal does so it hasn't been confiscated. But no computer this break, and if you were planning on going to Cameron's big New Year's party... I won't be there. Sorry. I'll see you when we get back to school, I guess, which sucks a little. But Ravi Dhaliwal is going to be visiting for a night, so I'll get one brief 24 hour reprieve from being surrounded by people who're frustrated with me. Have you ever seen Mulholland Drive? I'm watching it tonight so I can talk about it with him when he visits. Johanna teased me about it having lesbian sex scenes. (Ravi, what????) I thought I was going to die.

ANYWAY. We actually got some snow here, so I went on a hike to take it in. It'll probably all be melted away by this afternoon, but I got a photo. It's not the same as seeing it in person, but the contrast of the snow on the red rock is incomparable.

So, since I won't be there in person, Happy New Year, Cecil. Here's to a fresh start, new beginnings, etc. Thanks for being my friend. I'm looking forward to another year of it.
Your bored but surviving friend,
Diego

Dear Diego,

I found this stationary in town and thought of you, but do you think it's a bit much? I think it might be a bit much.

Anyway, I miss you and Levi and the others, but it's wonderful to get to catch up with my family and to be home for a while. Mostly, I've just been helping dad out with the hives (he got some new bees, too; Apis caeruleus -- their honey is blue!), doing a lot of cooking and a lot of decorating with mom, and spending almost every other moment with at least one of my sisters. Playing games or walking in the woods (it's lovely but it's frigid) or just talking. They told me that they're thinking about applying to Gooseberry for next year! I wonder if any of them would up in Azurcrest? I have a feeling Mel would be in Coppertale, but I'm not sure about Daph and Cleo. I hope they do apply and I hope they get in; I really can't imagine a better place for them. Though, I'd probably end up bothering poor Addy to keep an eye on them for me, wouldn't I? But I passed on the 'hi' (which was returned enthusiastically) and mom said I should send you some of the last batch of cookies too. As always, she's right, so you'll find those enclosed too.

Everything else aside, I hope that you and your family managed to have a nice holiday together; you all love each other and that's what this time of year is about. I'm sorry you're grounded, though. As your goody-goody friend who follows all the rules, I guess I should be telling you to come clean about the journal, but I definitely can't; I'd miss you! I'm glad you've got the piano and the clarinet to focus on, though. Are you finding that you prefer one over the other so far? I'm sure you'll be amazing with both! As for Cameron's party, I wasn't actually planning to go either. I'm going to spend New Year's with Levi. I'm not sure what we'll be doing yet, but he was trying to convince me to go to Las Vegas. Can you imagine? Mom would kill me! I'm sure we'll get something figured out. But I'm eager to see you when we get back to school. It's wonderful that Ravi's coming out to see you, though! It seems like you guys are getting to be pretty close and I'm sure you'll have a great time. I haven't seen Mulholland Drive, but I'm sure there's more to it than that unless I'm a much worse judge of character than I thought. Did Ravi recommend it to you?

There's nothing but snow here right now and I don't always appreciate it as much as I should, but that's really beautiful. And you're right, I've never seen anything quite like it! It must've been amazing to see in person. Thanks for sending it along; I think you'll see it again on my bulletin board at school.

Happy New Year, Diego. Even though we won't be together to start it off, I'll be thinking of you and I hope that the new year brings us both health and happiness. A lot's happened this year and I know a lot more will change as we graduate (there's only one semester left -- how did that even happen?), but you'll always be my friend. I've got the bracelet to prove it.

Your verbose but well-intentioned friend,
Cecil Honeychurch

My favorite Cecil,
The stationary is not too much. Why would you say that? I love it. You know I love it.

It's too bad your siblings won't be here while we are. Having Essie in Azurcrest with me was such a great experience, even though things are a little awkward on and off right now. Anyway, once they're all in you can give them some great brotherly advice on surviving at Gooseberry. Tell your mom the cookies were amazing. My moms say hi back, and I asked if they had anything to tell you. Ofelia wants to thank you for "being the lone good influence on [her] son in that den of sin." (Good news: she's almost definitely joking.) She also sends her belated congratulations for being made Head Boy.

It was a nice holiday, I'm just complaining, because it's all I can do. Thanks for not tattling on me, though! If I were completely cut off from the world, I would probably die. Or maybe just practice more? So far, the piano's easier to pick up, probably because I've spent so long working alongside Isaiah. I'm going to ask him for some tips when we get back to school.

And... wow. Vegas? Really? That's a lot. I'll pass. (He says, as though leaving the house was even an option.) Don't do anything you're not comfortable with. You know Levi likes to GO BIG, but he'll listen to you if you'd rather have a quiet evening or slow things down a little. I hope you have fun, whatever you decide on.

As for Ravi, I tried to talk to him about music and he started explaining this movie to me for a song in it. He described it as a dream, a nightmare, and a love story, sooooo I'm guessing there's more to it than soft core pornography. He was, admittedly, pretty drunk at my birthday party while we were talking about this, so the explanation was a little... well, you've listened to me try to explain complex pretentious art things to you while I'm trashed. It's kind of hit and miss, but it must have worked, because here I am talking about seeing it. By next my letter, I'll have watched it. It was just great going to my stepmom and asking about getting the movie, and the first thing she says to me is "Do you want to see it for the lesbian sex scenes? Because they're probably online somewhere." Highlight of my holiday season.

You'll have to come out here in the winter sometime. It's been 45° here. I wore a light jacket today, Cecil. I ran out to the barn in a tee shirt and it was totally fine.

After all this, I don't think anything the next year can throw at us will stand a chance. So, yeah, best friends forever, that bracelet is a curse you cannot escape. I put a protection charm in yours so I can just leave it on all the time. That's the standard I'm setting.
Your passably entertaining friend,
Diego
