ELYSIAN ARCHIVES OF LOS ANGLES From the desk of Eva Kim:
Dear Casper,
I'm sorry that I have to write this letter and that I have to send it to you now, when you're supposed to be returning home tomorrow. I know that you were looking forward to coming back. Unfortunately, the situation has changed recently and I need you to remain at school for the duration of the holiday.
Over the last week, some complications have developed with Caroline's condition, complications which the caregiver and I can no longer manage without assistance, and a healer arrived this morning to assess her condition. She won't be returning to the hospital yet, but she requires peace, quiet, rest, and the attention of additional healers until the problem can be properly assessed and properly managed. You and I care for her, Casper, but that isn't what she needs right now and there's nothing that we can do. I know this will make you angry. I know this will hurt you. But please trust that I'm acting with the wisdom of experience and that you don't need to be here for this. Your mother is a strong woman and, once she recovers, I'll arrange for you to come see her. For now, though, please be her strong son and respect my wishes.
I've sent an owl to your headmistress and to Ms. Rhee to inform them of the situation. I have no doubt that they will make the necessary adjustments to accommodate you and that they will be available if you need anything. As always, I'll answer any correspondences as quickly as I'm able. Though I don't expect you will want to write to me immediately and that's all right.
I hope to see you soon and I'll write again as soon as I know more.
