❄WINTER FORMAL❄

❄WINTER FORMAL❄

It's a good thing that classes are over, because students need all the time they can get to don the dress robes, suits and gowns demanded by the formal theme. Starting at 7 PM, house-elves will take cloaks and coats when students arrive, and usher them past silvery curtains into a sparkling ice palace. Crystal columns and shimmering frost-covered curtains create the illusion that everything in the Atrium is made of ice, and the whole area is lit by a gigantic floating chandelier of real icicles and cold-burning blue flames. Even the floor has been polished to an icy sheen, and dancers will feel like they're gliding across the frozen lake. (Don't worry, it's not actually as slippery—or cold!) Magical snow falls from the Atrium ceiling, vanishing into nothingness just above everyone's heads.

For entertainment, Po'boy Peep Show is playing an opening set on the stage (which is edged in magical fake snow). After the show, the doors to the cafeteria open, revealing that the whole area's been taken up by a romantic maze of fake trees lit up by fairy lights. It's the perfect place to get lost with your date. The maze keeps magically changing, revealing a fresh experience each time, and anyone who manages to reach the exit receives a prize.

A sumptuous dinner has been laid out buffet-style on long tables, and students can eat at little tables and chairs which have been enchanted to look as though they're made of ice. Each table sits four at the most, and house-elves are on hand to provide or clear plates and cutlery. Refreshments are provided at the crystal punch bowl, and Prospero is watching carefully to make sure no one spikes it! Vegan, vegetarian and kosher options are available and clearly marked.

Outside on the large balcony overlooking the lake, you can keep company with four ice sculptures depicting nymph-like figures playing with a bear, a fox, jays, or a school of trout. If you want breather, you can sit at one of the little white benches, next to bluebell flame lamps providing warmth and light on this chilly but romantic December night.
  • The dance starts at 7:00 PM, and runs until around 11:00 PM.
  • Students will be leaving first thing in the morning, and were encouraged to spend as much time packing as they did preening.
  • Most students will wear gowns and suits, but you only need to wear semi-formal for admittance.
  • The music will start upbeat and appropriate for wild dancing, and as the night goes on it'll slow to romantic slow dances and classical.
» Setup: In the afternoon, Event Committee work on getting the Atrium looking its best. Event Committee has thrown up magically impenetrable curtains around the Atrium, so even students exiting lunch at 1 PM won't be able to see what they're working on. At 2 PM, the cafeteria is closed for a "surprise."

» BEFORE THE DANCE: It's chaos for hours as everyone tries to figure out how to make themselves presentable for the formal/semi-formal dress code. The trails have been swept by Mr. Covington, to make it easy as possible for students get to the lodge. (He recommends wearing your boots, and changing footwear once you reach the lodge.)

» THE BEGINNING OF THE DANCE: Students are allowed into the Atrium and get to admire the decorations and everyone's finest clothes. The student band, Po'boy Peep Show, plays a short set to get things started. (~7:00 PM)

» THE TREE MAZE: The cafeteria doors open, revealing a forest of pale white trees and bushes, with silvery leaves that reflect the fairy lights adorning them. The ceiling has been made to look like a starry, partially clouded sky, and fake snow flurries fall down onto the maze. It’s a beautiful, dazzling, and somewhat disorienting sight. The maze is large, with multiple nooks and crannies for amorous couples to get lost in, complete with plush white loveseats and one romantic gazebo. In order to keep things interesting, the maze shifts and changes, opening and closing routes, so no two walks are the same! Anyone who makes it to the end of the maze receives a delicate crown of ice. However, there’s an unforeseen game that comes out of this...
  • RACING: Certain enterprising students have made a game of timing their progress through the maze. There’s no prize besides bragging rights, but is that really going to stop you from trying? Reply to the sub-comment labelled “RACING” and one of the mods will rng how long it took to get through the maze. For the sanity of the mods, any given character can only try five times. (The fourth and fifth attempts will always be a guaranteed success.)
  • The current fastest is Casey & Ivy with a time of 6:38.
» THE MIDDLE OF THE DANCE: Finally, things really take off! There's dance music, dinner is served, and everyone is milling about freely. (~8:00-11:00 PM)

» THE BALCONY: The balcony overlooks the lake, and some students mingle out here to chat or appreciate the scenery. (~8:00-11:00 PM)

» END OF THE NIGHT: At 11 PM, a strange chill passes through the Atrium—it’s the only warning before the chandelier’s charms fail. Thanks to the quick thinking of Christopher Park, who casts a giant shield charm over the dance floor, and Leonardo Fiori, who melts most of the ice before the chandelier hits the ground, no one is seriously hurt—although a few people do get doused with ice water. (~11:00-12:00)

» late night: After the dance has long since passed, is there anything else happening? (12:00 AM onwards.)

At some point, Penny slips away (near the end of the night but not quite at the end) to check out the balcony. It's really nice out there and she takes this time to sort of decompress.

Isaiah has been making frequent trips onto the balcony all night, because it's quiet and he needs the break from the crowds.

When he spots Penny out there, he almost runs away, but then he works up his courage and goes over.

"Uh. Hi," he says, awkwardly as usual. "I will leave you alone in a minute, but I want to say I'm sorry for upsetting you the...the other day."

The last person she expected to see was Isaiah. The two... had tense words the other day, and he was clearly upset at the prank she was clearly responsible for even if she had not outright said it. Even if it had been an accident and an unintended prank at that. The fact that he walked outside and said anything to her took balls, something Penelope definitely admired.

To add to the amount of balls Isaiah had, he also apologized for upsetting her and Penelope was left standing there completely dumbfounded and speechless for a moment.

"Don't apologize." She finally said, shaking it off. "It was my fault. Someone and I had been working on that mistletoe for weeks to use at parties, and it wasn't ready... it left the Charms room on accident and spread all over the school. I was really embarrassed, and I took being called terrible really badly."

Not one to admit defeat on many occasions, Penelope would always respond to someone who responded well first. She wasn't a bad person, just a highly reactionary one.

Isaiah nodded. He had figured as much, the outline if not the details. "I appreciate the admission," he said after some thought. "You aren't terrible. The situation was. And I reacted badly as well. So, again, I'm sorry for that."

"Thank you. And I'm sorry if I upset you, with more than just being a bitch on the post." She replied, giving him a half-smile, though it was heartfelt.

Knowing Garrett, he probably took frequent breaks from socializing in order to go out on the balcony and just kind of breathe for a while. Anyone is welcome to trip upon him there.

It's a measly two hours in before Ravi decides he needs to step out onto the balcony. Ravi decides to justify it as a generous two hours he's allowing Asher to scribble observations in his notebook before Ravi forces him to get some fresh air, as a good friend should.

"Because, Asher, you need a break— Oh!" Ravi stops to look at the ice sculptures. He wonders if a student created them. "How beautiful. Gooseberry never does things by halves."

"But Mooooom," Asher protests, shoving said notebook in his back pocket as he follows Ravi outside. No one can say he isn't a dutiful son, at least; plus, he honestly doesn't mind a bit of a break from the large amount of people inside.

He slows to a stop as Ravi does, looking over the sculptures with appreciation as well. "They certainly don't. You know, I loved Magicrest but there's just something... else about Gooseberry. It's a great place."

"I'll miss it," Ravi says, a bit absently. He's staring at the outstretched wings of the flock of jays. The ice is so thin, it's translucent. He wants to touch them to check if it really is ice, but he knows better than to touch art. "I thought Ilvermorny was so special when I came there the first time... and don't get me wrong, it was. But... I don't know." He shoves his hands into his pockets. "There's nowhere else like this school."

As Asher's eyes move over to another of the ice sculptures, this one with the fox, he nods a little in agreement with his friend's words. He's definitely going to miss it.

"...to tell the truth, I really don't want to leave. At all." He's still trying to sound upbeat but his voice is falling flat. It's hard for him to talk about this, even though it's Ravi. "Yeah, it's...just isolated enough and small enough to feel safe. And I feel like I belong here now, so it's hard to think of having to go off somewhere else and find that again."

Ravi finally turns away from the sculptures to look at his friend. "I didn't think you worried about that. I mean, you're... you. Asher Guthrie, Intrepid Reporter." There's a slight, wry smile which suggests Ravi isn't being entirely serious, but his eyes are full of concern. "You're always going to belong somewhere, Asher. Even when we're all... scattered... across the country. We're not going to forget each other."

Asher turns to meet Ravi's eyes, quirking his own smile that nearly matches his companion's. That is him, he thinks. But what if it shouldn't be? What if he's made a bad decision with the whole reporter thing? He should be something with more purpose - an Auror like Casper, a Healer like Ravi. What about leaving Casper behind? What about all the Junior and Sophomore and Freshman Ribbonfins that he's not responsible for because he's not a Prefect but still feels responsible for because he's Asher Guthrie, Intrepid Reporter, up in everyone's business? What if he's actually a shit reporter anyways? What if he hates everyone he meets from now on? What if...

He glances off again, still smiling. "I know, I know. It's all going to be fine anyways, it always is. I'll be fine. It's just..." Scary.

Don't deflect, he thinks for a moment, don't stop, you're doing so well- "How are you doing with everything? I know it's been stressful for everyone, but I...was a little worried, after the Grotto Party."

"Asher..." Ravi knows that smile. It's the smile he also wears sometimes—more than sometimes. The smile that says yes, yes, of course I'm just being silly, don't mind me, these are just idle thoughts. Normally, Ravi leaves the obvious lie alone. He understands how important that armour is.

Normally, he would, except Ravi's been anything but normal lately. "What is there to worry about? Plenty of prefects go to Grotto parties and get drunk. Why not me? I was long overdue for it." There's the barest edge of impatience in Ravi's voice. He takes a deep breath, suppressing it again. "I'm fine, Asher. Really. It's just..."

He closes his eyes. Why do they keep having these conversations where they don't talk about anything? Asher, one of his best friends. Stop deflecting.

"To tell you the truth?" Ravi laughs, without humour. "I really don't want to leave either."

Asher's smile falters; looks like he might not be getting away with his fibbing after all. It's a surprise since he's rarely, if ever, called out for lying like this. He loosens his tie, still not looking at Ravi until the other young man finishes speaking.

"Ravi, I know - you should be able to do whatever you want, I'm not saying that at all. Hell, I think it's good for you to have a bit of a wild night. But it's just... out of character, and that's why I'm worried. Not because I don't think you should get a little crazy sometimes, but because I don't know what brought it on."

It feels a little better to know that he doesn't want to leave either, at least. "What's creeping around in the back of your mind that makes you want to stay?" After a long moment he heads towards one of the benches, beckoning Ravi along.

Ravi sighs, very softly, but he follows Asher to the bench. He doesn't want to fight with him. There's nothing he hates more than being at odds with one of his friends.

"The same reason as you, I imagine? Or maybe not. Who in the world knows what either of us are really thinking," he jokes, very dryly. "I feel like... I've always known what I was going to do. When I was five, I wanted to be a doctor. When it turned out I was a wizard, I decided to become a Healer instead. I got admitted to Gooseberry, one of the best magical schools in the country. Then in six months, I'll be going straight into one of the best Healer training programs in the country. Four years, maybe three, as a Healer-in-training. Two years travelling abroad in international Healer programs. Five years to reach a senior position in a hospital. At some point during this process, I'll get married and have children. Did you know that I've actually figured out the ideal times in my career to have children?"

He exhales slowly. It's everything he ever wanted. To know exactly which step he had to take next, and the next five steps after that, charted in as much detail as possible. The logical, responsible path. Minimal risk.

"I keep wondering if I'm going to wake up ten years from now and realize I made a mistake."

As Asher sits down on the bench he interlaces his fingers behind his head, feeling the chill of the air outside but not missing his gloves for the moment. The heat of the lamps helps keep some of the cold at bay. He tilts his head up to look skyward, watching his breath puff visibly with each exhale. His frame is tense, but not in any clearly aggressive way at least.

He does smile at Ravi's comment on the inability to know what either of them is thinking - it's definitely not something he's going to argue with. That smile fades, however, as the other young man continues to speak.

"...I worry about that too. A lot. I don't know who thought letting teenagers make decisions for themselves was a good idea." Asher lets out a weak laugh. "But... I mean, is it really what you want to do then? If you're that worried? You...over-plan. Sometimes." All the time, probably. "I mean, I guess it's kind of a pot, kettle situation here but..."

"I can't even imagine what three years from now looks like. How are you already planning for kids, dude?" There's a tiny bit of humor in his voice.

"I'd like to get married and have a family. Wouldn't you?" Ravi wonders if that's a strange admission, considering his rather strict "no dating" policy. It was never because he disliked the idea of dating, but... Ravi's said so many things over the years, maybe he shouldn't be surprised if people don't really know why he chooses the things he does.

Or maybe Asher's incredulity has more to do with the fact that they're only seventeen. Ravi shrugs, ducking his head in embarrassment. "I've had a lot of time to think about it. I've never wanted anything else—becoming a Healer, I mean." He sounds wistful. It's true, he's never wanted anything else. Nothing practical, at any rate. There's limited career opportunities for brave knights. Is it that Ravi lacks imagination, or has too much of it?

He looks over at his friend. "You're so good at what you do. Writing, investigating, talking to people. You work so hard." Ravi tilts his head a little, watching Asher's deceptively relaxed pose. "Do you love it? Trying to be a journalist?"

"I do want those things eventually, yeah. I guess I just get so preoccupied worrying about other stuff that I never really thought about... planning for it." Being the total romantic he is, Asher has just sort of assumed that the whole fairytale life of getting married, having kids, settling down, would just sort of... happen to him when the time was right. And he had thought he was on track for that sort of ending with Seraphina.

"It's... I mean, if it makes you happy, then do it, go for it." The tone in Ravi's voice is reassuring to him at least. "If you do what you want that's the most you can do right now, right? It's the right decision in the moment, so the future will just have to pan out how it's going to pan out."

Hands still behind his head, Asher shifts to look at Ravi. "As for me... I do love journalism, really. It's just..." He bites his lip. "Like you said - I've never wanted anything else. But sometimes it feels a little pointless. I know logically that it's not. Hell, a year ago I would have been the first person talking about the importance of journalists. But, maybe now that it's closer, it just seems... childish. There are more worthwhile things I could be dedicating my life to."
